Car problems

OK, so the other night I was driving the car kinda hard to my friends house. Then on the way back, which I drove normally, I was coming a hill right beside my alotment and I gave it some gas. Next thing I heard was a pop and then the car just died. When it stopped I popped the hood and it looked like there was white smoke coming from the back passenger side, which smelled like burnt rubber. The car wouldn't start again and my voltage gauge was sitting at about 2 volts. When I would crank it, it would seem like it wanted to start but then just die immediately. This morning the voltage was up to around 6, but the car didn't even want to start, it just cranked.

Anybody have any suggestions on what it could be wrong?

Thanks!

I'd be looking at the starter and battery cable to it.

I will check that out. I have a feeling it has something to do with the charging system, but I am not sure. The thing that has me confussed is the smoke. I checked all the battery cables up top but not the starter yet, I haven't even really been able to look at it.

Thanks shoebox.

After checking the starter and battery cable. I would check the opti. Same thing happened to my car and it turned out to be a bad opti.

Thats what I was hoping I could avoid. I was running a MSD Digital 6 plus, but it hasn't worked since I washed my car last.......seems like everything is breakin at once. I was going to take the serpentine belt off and see if it would start then, maybe a frozen alternator. Just seems weird my car would die then immediatly afterwards my volts are at 2, when normally they are somewhere up around 8 or 9.

I sitll can't get the voltage up to where it should be. I took the belt off but still no luck, nothing is seized. I am going to replace the battery anyways since I am not sure how old it is, and if it is any good. When I try to crank the car now it just sounds like a dead battery problem, click click, click. Hopefully tomoorow I will have a better idea. I did get to check the cable to the starter though it looked alright.

As far as the white smoke, why it would it be coming from the back passenger side, looked like it was the PCM that was smoking. Hope I didn't blow a head gasket........
