Car over heated... Whats wrong?

Hey guys. I have a 96 TA with 80,000 miles. I was driving today like normal, and pulled into a driveway, sat there for about a minute, backed out, and then drove away. About 10 seconds later it smelled like coolant. I pulled over and coolant was boiling over the fill spout. My temp guage was maxed out. It did not appear to be leaking anywhere from the actual motor, but it was pouring out near the fill spout by the battery. It was not showing any symptoms of over haeting it just happened suddenly. Could it be simply a thermostat, or may it be a water pump problem? Thanks in advance guys.

Fill spout? Radiator cap or overflow tank cap? Your radiator cap may have failed (not holding pressure), your waterpump drive gear may have stripped. Are your fans working?

Thermostat is a possibility and you should check to make sure the fans are working. If it does not overheat until you are not moving then it is probably the fans.

fans are working. The fans are on even after i shut the car off and remove the key, the fans continue to try and cool the mototr. It is not leaking from the actual radiator cap, it is leaking by the smaller black fill spout cap on the farside of the engine bay. So should i just replace the thermostat and the water pump?
