Just for a reference my 401 Stroker, 236/245 .600 lift cam, 12 bolt, 3.73's and PI3200 (that actually flash stalls to 4400rpms). I get 8 MPH city...20 Hyw...something is off and it's not just the verter to get that kind of city mileage with that mellow of a combo (big foot maybe). A hot cammed car should get 10-12 city and 22-24 MPG on the highway. Atleast that's what I have seen for stalled hot cammed cars that are "tuned" around these parts...

my hot cammed car gets around 16mpg city and almost 27 highway... so yes, there is definitely something amiss here... And the reason it feels so gutless is because you put a stock converter back in there after all that motor work. Of course it is gonna be a pig after doing that. It needs a nice high stall lock up to take advantage of all the lt4 work you did...

I think you just answered your own question

Seems you had too loose or more "race" a convertor than you liked - but of course you will feel faster with the "hit" a stall gives.

First mod I do to any A4 car is a convertor. It just makes driving a "performance" car more fun!
good luck

nope. Paralyzed right side from broken neck in 1982

I learned how to make automatics fun by 1983

Even still - the convertor and some gear really make the A4 a blast - without NEEDING to stir the shifter all the time.

This is just my thinking and I could be totally wrong here, but I will give it a shot.
I had my 97 LT1 TA A4 and we swapped out the stock converter for a 3300 stall TCi. The car picked up half a second in ET at the track. I loved it very much. Issue one was that it tripped the check engine light and the installer told me that it needed a custom tune to make the converter work even better , plus do away with the SES light. I got the tune and everything was great, except I could not stand taking off at a red light and everyone in minivans thinking I was racing so they would try to race me
The car got a little aggravating as a daily driver so one day I decided to sell the converter and put the stocker back in. This is where issuenumber two comes in. I had the stall swapped out and immediately felt your pain as the thing almost felt like it was slipping!!! I was so pissed that it was this slow. The installer told me that I had to go back to factory programming as it was still configured for the TCi. I paid cash to have it reversed and it improved greatly. I was still culture shocked from dropping in stall, but at least it flet better than being out-of-tune.
Get your stock programming set back up and see if it makes a difference.
Hope I helped, but if not....I tried.

Let me get on the same page with you first.
Did you say that you had the car tuned for the TCi in any way shape or form?
If so then what ?
If no programming was done then, do me a favor and disconnect the battery for a while. This should reset the learning curve.
.

Edit*
I just re-read the first post and you said "the previous owner had the tranny reprogrammed"
I think you mean he reprogrammed the pcm for the tranny upgrade.
This bieng the case you will need to find out what program he used..custom burned chip..etc...
If its a custom burned chip then you will need the factory chip to go back in it.
Check and see if its a piggyback chip also. If we got lucky and that was the case you just unplug it from the pcm.
Hit me back and we will go from there

unless the stall convertor slipping can be directy related to your poor gas milage - i'd put it back in and keep tuning/looking for other reasons. You indicate that driving was far better with the stall - just gas consumption. Keep in mind : you installed all the LT4 stuff and other mods expecting to go faster. I hope you expected a compromise for that

Pcmforless is great as they can talk you through it over the phone or email. I am not experienced enough to go into it as its been 7 years since my f body tuning days. Clicky here> http://www.pcmforless.com/index.php?...d=62&Itemid=40

Also , one other question. Was the LT4 stuff put on the same time the stall was put in ?
If so like mentioned above.... The car may experience problems with low end torque on a factory stall with the LT4 stuff and factory gearing.

I had a close friend who changed over to LT4 and kept stock gearing and converter and lost low end big time!
