car doesn't shift right

I'm so confused about my car. Drove it today and barely got into the gas and it revs to 3k rpm before it shifts to 2nd (this is in overdrive) and it will only shift into other gears at 3k rpm and won't downshift at all when i punch the gas to it. It will just stay in overdrive but it will downshift when i come to a stop. I pull over and shut the engine off and resart about 10 seconds later and it shifts perfect and goes into passing gear perfect. Any idea what the problem could be. Please help I would like to start modding my car again but I've had some problems with it in last few months.

Forgot to mention when it finally shifts it shifts real hard like it has a shift kit in it. But when working correctly it shifts smooth.

My 700r4 in my 86 used to do that as well.. i never did figure out what it was.. as the tranny was new, but long as you let her warm up for a few minutes first you should be okay. Does it only do it when it is cold outside? or does it do it all of the time?

Today the car started idling fast. After the engine warms up you can shut the engine off and restart and the idling goes down and the transmission shifts correctly. But shut the engine off and let it get cold again and it does the same thing. My service engine light comes on for a few seconds and then goes away when running bad, but doesn't come on when running good. Does anybody have any clue what the problem might be.

You need to get it scanned and see what code it's throwing. It sure would be nice if it was the TPS. But I wouldn't just throw parts at it without scanning it first.

mine usally doesnt throw any codes except the fact i dont have cats.

EDIT: My car runs like crap when its warmed up studders out under 2 grand, and then past 5 it start it again, it might be the TPS sensor, not to hijack ur thread what do you all think?

Yeah I went to a garage today to have it scanned but they're backed up with customers. The guy scheduled me to come in on Friday so I'll know then.

Hey guys sorry for the delay but I've been with my g/f all weekend. I got my car fixed had it scanned Friday evening the computer didn't throw any codes but they said the throttle was showing being open at 14 degrees so they recommended a TPS. So I got one and the problem is solved. Thanks for the help guys.

The GM TPS was 45 bucks but they didn't have any in stock and I didn't want to wait for it to come in so I went to Advance Auto Parts and gave $30.99 for one. Yeah my car has a little sputter when idling and engines shakes a little. Didn't pay any attention if the sensor helped the smoothness though.
