Car Breakin Up at Wot

Ok lately when i floor it in my car it'll break up in the upper rpm's. When it first started it would break up a little from 5000 to 6000 but it wasen't horrible. Well the other day i went wot and it broke up really bad and was just sputtering and couldnt get over 4000 rpm's and i wasen't gaining any speed. After getting on it a few more times it started running good again and only on occasion would it break up from 5000-6000 rpm's. What could be causing this? The previous owner (my dad's friend) said it got a tune up not to long ago. I think the plugs and wires have no more than 15k on them or less. I'm thinking it could be the fuel filter?
So if you have any idea's on what it could be i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks Blaze

Re: Car Breakin Up at Wot

Sounds ignition related...maybe a burnt wire or bad plug. I'd check all of those and then once everything is checked look into the Opti. It's usually the first thing that is said to be wrong, but it's alot cheaper to replace the others and fix it then change the opti and it not fix the problem.

Re: Car Breakin Up at Wot

You know I just finished putting on my headers and I have the exact same problem!!! I have no idea what it is from but it only happens in the upper RPM's around 5-6000. It just kinda sputters.. The car runs great otherwise, it idles smoothly and runs great in all RPM ranges other than the upper-upper RPM's. I hope its something easy to fix, all my wires seem to be good and not burned. My friend said he had the exact same problem but it ended up being a loose plug. Maybe I'll try tightening them up...

Since it sounds like you have the same problems as my car let's try to keep each other updated if either one of us finds something that fixes the problem.

I have had to tightin my plugs 4 or 5 times now after puting my headers in and it did the same thing you guys cars did and it also did the samething when i had a burnt spark plug wire.Check that out and if that isnt it hate to say it it may be the opti.

Re: Car Breakin Up at Wot

I sure hope it's not opti, plugs,or wires and i'm really hoping it's just my fuel filter. Anyway if i was to get my car scanned do you think anything would show up?
Anyways the problem seems to happen mostly between 5-6 but tonight once i hit about 4k it would break up all the way to 6k. And then other times it'll run just fine so i really don't know what it is, but it's getting worse.

One more thing i also installed my tuned pcm and when i took it out to test it was the first time it started to break up but i just figured it was the pcm getting used to car but since it kept breaking up i figured it was something else but i guess it could be the pcm?

Re: Car Breakin Up at Wot

My car did that a while back. It ended up being the wires shorting to each other because some of them had fallen out of the looms and were too close to each other. The weird thing was it only did it at higher RPMs which is weird bacause theoretically on a stock ignition there should be less spark energy at higher RPMs because of lack of the capacitive discharge found on ignitions such as an MSD box. The coil has less time to charge, but none the less, that ended up being the problem. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Re: Car Breakin Up at Wot

I could see my old wires arcing in the daytime because the engine bay is dark enough. It really depends on where they are arcing.

Re: Car Breakin Up at Wot

I know i can check for arcing and stuff but is there anything else i can do to troubleshoot other things that may be causing this? Or do i have to just start buying and replacing stuff until it's fixed?

Re: Car Breakin Up at Wot

Kinda wierd mine stopped doing the hesitation thing.. I think it must of just been the computer relearning the new headers and the massive flow that once was not existant.
