cap and rotor opti

I was thinking My first opti 6 or so years old went bad and I replaced it. I took the old one apart and found that the cap and rotor were beyond corroded. I thinking that since I spray and wanting a good spark should I just replace the cap and rotor? How much or where should I look for a decent priced one?

Re: cap and rotor opti

There are differing opinions on replacing the whole unit or the cap and rotor. My take on it is, the job is a PITB's to begin with, and the bearing does go bad from time to time therefore. Replace the whole thing. Either get it from Dal or gmpartsdirect.com.

We have heard that many crappy auto parts stores (Advance or Autozone) carry the cap and rotor. And some have had good success with them.

If you want reliability, you may want to consider switching to the Delteq system which only uses the low voltage optical encoders for Hi and Low res but does AWAY with the cap and rotor all together. With no moving parts for the high voltage side, it should provide years of good service and does not have the problems the typical opti does with the high voltage side of the "correct-a-cap".

Re: cap and rotor opti

I help a friend put a d-tech on a 94 And none of his MSD would work. It was bad since he had a 2 step. The opti on my car takes me 3 hours to change and put away tools since there is no air pump. I am a heavy truck tech so this car is cake compared to most the stuff I work on. thanks for opionion all are welcome.

Re: cap and rotor opti

Summit racing sells the complete Optisparks now... for a good price... I'd replace the entire optispark... I tried the cap and rotor kit not listening to the guys on here... and just ended up taking the opti out and redoing the whole thing again with a NEW GM opti... a week later. It's worth the extra cash to get the GM opti... The opti is very important to the performance of the LT-1... I forgot my car could go over 5500Rpms... before I replaced my Opti...

Re: cap and rotor opti

I purchsed a new gm opti from summit. It broke in about a month. The rotor failed again. Then I purchased a Dynotech-eng dist. $600.00 It coroded and I had to remove and dissect (waste of money). Lots of green stuff on the copper, and there is only one (1) rivet holding the copper on. Heck, I could of done that. I designed and machined my own rotor for the original opti. Better than anybody makes, even D-tech. It will not break anymore. Opti's don't like CD ignition. So, if you buy an opti from summit, take apart and drill out the first hole and insert a 1/8 rivet.

Re: cap and rotor opti

I believe a 1994 opti will not fit a 1996/ 1997 model. The cam drive was changed.
