Can a LT1 be removed from the top of the car?
Re: Can a LT1 be removed from the top of the car?
i seem to remember people saying that it can be done, you just have to take the tranny off before you lift it out. it is MUCH easier to just drop it out the bottom
Re: Can a LT1 be removed from the top of the car?
Yes it can. Remove the headers, intake, and some front accessories and its not that hard to do. I've done it twice this way. Of course take out ac condensor and radiator. Tranny does not have to be removed. Just use a load lever on end of hoist.
Re: Can a LT1 be removed from the top of the car?
I took mine out the top ONLY because I didn't know any better. If I ever have to do it again it will be coming out the bottom. Sounds like your mechanic knows what he's talking about...........those are hard to find these days, that's why I do all my work.
Re: Can a LT1 be removed from the top of the car?
i have done it 3 times without a lift, i just use the engine jack to pick up the front of the car, then we used a cheap creeper with some wood blocks on it to support the k member once the body was off the motor, once the body was high enough (about the highest the cherry picker will go) then you just roll the motor and tranny out
Re: Can a LT1 be removed from the top of the car?
^ I think I'm going to try reinstalling the motor that way. I really want to put the block on the K-member, install the top half of the motor, harness, headers, etc. and install it that way. It would save me a whole lot of frustration.
Re: Can a LT1 be removed from the top of the car?
You don't need a lift, some ppl (not me) have even done it w/o a cherry picker, just a bunch of spacers on their floor jack, and some luck.
Re: Can a LT1 be removed from the top of the car?
I took mine out the top, in thru the bottom. When coming out the top, I took off the accessories from the front of engine, tranny, intake and radiator. I was actually able to keep the condensor in the car w/ AC lines and did not have to bleed the system. It can be done easily especially if the AC is out of the way also. If you have a hydraulic lift for the car, take it out the bottom, much quicker that way.
