Can I start my car with no transmission in it??

Well I got the tranny out last night, sending it back for a rebuild.
The flywheel is still on, but I was gonna unbolt it and replace my rear main which I think is leaking.
Question is, I was going to start the car after I cleaned up the back of the engine to see where the oil is coming from. Can/should I do this? If so, should the flywheel be bolted on still or doesn't it matter?

Of course you can, as long as the flywheel is securely on and you have the starter hooked up properly, there is no reason why you couldn't.
LOL just read your last sentence. Obviously the flywheel needs to be on for the starter to crank it, unless you wanna try by hand, hahaha
