Can I improve gas mileage?

My car just turned over 120k but it is still running strong. All the fluids, filters, plugs, wires, sensors are all changed and properly maintained. The car runs strong and smooth. It has a few bolts ons.

I recently ran 13.9 at the track, good time imo for the car. Idle is good, I keep the tires filled up to 35psi, etc. I haven't changed the opti but I dont see any need to, the car doesnt misfire or anything. It isn't throwing any codes either.

On 92 Octane gas, I only get about 165 miles per tank. I know it is winter now and its colder but in the summer i got about the same. This ends up being about 12.5 mpg. It has 2.73s, mostly suburban driving, I drive it pretty good, only go WOT once in a while.

Does anyone know anything else I can do to get some better gas mileage. I can't think of anything else.

And I felt bad for getting that kind of MPG Atleast I have a FEW mods.. I can't imagine why you have such crappy fuel economy.

Go on a road trip and see what kind of mileage you get.

I actually get around the same with just bolt ons and a tune. I'm usually pretty lucky to see 200mpg city/highway mix. I do drive it like I stole it, though..

Re: Can I improve gas mileage?

2 slightly arcing wires got me down to 11 mpg once Had that for 2 tanks(wasn't really bad at all) then fixed it and got 17

BTW, that was in my last TA, bolt ons, auto with 4.10s. Not the one in sig. One in sig gets 23 on the highway going 80. Im happy

Re: Can I improve gas mileage?

get a performance tune. My mileage shot up when i did that. Used to fill up at like 165 like you, now i fill up at 230ish.

Re: Can I improve gas mileage?

I changed the fuel filter 5k miles ago so i think that would be good. O2 sensors 1000 miles ago. Plugs and wires at the same time i did the filter. I cleaned cai filter when i did the o2 sensors. Nothing seemed to help whatsoever.

Now, about the arcing plug wires, I don't believe any of mine are burnt or arcing, any good way to check that?

Start the car up at night time so its really dark, and pop the hood and look for little sparks here and there.

Re: Can I improve gas mileage?

Most I've ever recorded on my car was 21.3 mpg with like 70% highway driving...

Re: Can I improve gas mileage?

i get about 200 miles on a tank i thought that was kinda low but i found out my passenger side manifold leaks so bad you can feel the pressure on your finger when you put it by the manifold and sounds like a prop in a water lol no other way of explaining the noise so that could be somewhat detrimental to my mpg

Re: Can I improve gas mileage?

I get about 250-260 miles per tank....I cant imagine only getting like 160 miles per tank. And that is also with an exhaust leak.

Re: Can I improve gas mileage?

I've been the same for the last 3 years, and have blindly replaced parts, as well as doing the basics (plugs, wires, filters, O2's, et cetera). I also have it tuned from TPIS.

Granted my driving is normally all in town, and I'm normally on it heavy but when I drive highway my gas mileage remains in similar numbers. Also I have went several tanks in a row babying the heck out of the car and got the same mileage. I've also had the car sit for an extended 2 week period, and got the same mileage from that tank -which in my head, ruled out a leak from the tank itself.

Anyway, if you figure this out, please post back!

Re: Can I improve gas mileage?

Thought I'd reply to this thread seeing that gas prices are skyrocketing again. I actually get about 270 average in my TA, and that is about 70% highway 30% city. A month ago I got 325 on a road trip, it was around 23 mpg I put 14 gallons in the tank. My wifes sold 2000 TA would get over 30 mpg on the highway, but it was really bad in the city, worse than my LT1. I have 144k miles now, have always used mobil 1 5w30 and change it around 5k miles. I mainly use 93 Shell premium. I don't think my car ever got better than 23 mpg so I'm happy. A guy at my dealer had a 96 TA that he programmed with lt1 edit to use 87 octane. But he said there where other tweaks he could make to get better Fuel Economy, but performance would suffer somewhat.
