Can I go bigger than a gm847 on stock heads?
Re: Can I go bigger than a gm847 on stock heads?
Well considering that the fastest M6 bolt on guy just had me design a cam for a him so he can go after the fastest t"cam only" time.... I have a very opinionated view of it. The cam was smaller than the GM847 and bigger than the 218/224 LR mentioned.
BTW if you want to see some TQ and HP curve comparisons of that big Joe O cam and what I would consider the right cam with pretty equal ported heads... I'm willing to share. The TQ curve will speak for itself.

if you read the origanal post its says he has stock (homeported heads).
brett. im not trying to start one of those old joe O threads. trust me.
there is a car on his website its a full weight TA. that put down 428 rwhp, through a 2 speed power glide, and a 12 bolt on a stock bottom end with 100k on it. and ran 11.05 at 120. i know the cam specs of that car. and they are not smaller than the 847. yes he has about everybolt on you can think of.
and theres also someone running 11.7x on one of his cam that is only 2 degrees bigger than the hotcam.
i personally dont care about rwhp and torqe give me track times.
by the way what is the fastest 6speed camed car record and does camed car mean ported heads or stock untouch castings?
i do agree you dont have to go big to make power but if you want to make the most power you can its going to be bigger than the 847, even on a stock bottom end, personlay i would not go bigger than the 847 on stock untouched heads.
good luck on that goal bret
Re: Can I go bigger than a gm847 on stock heads?
Ain't my goal boss... I just get asked to supply my knowledge. Thanks either way!
I liked the thread with Joe BTW.... when someone calls me out it's about the only time I actually care enough to write something with some meaning on here.
stock untouched castings.
Well the most power I can for me is the most average power in the useable RPM band. For drag racing that should be the highest useable RPM band that you can run the motor in, and the most average power in that RPM band.
There is always such a thing as too much cam too.....
