can I get a smaller alternator?

I searched and it seem there is a TON of info for upgrading to a bigger alt. But I want one that is smaller and lighter.

I see alot of guys upgrade from the older CS130 to the CS144 140amp. But my question is can I downsize to a smaller 85 or 100 amp cs130?

I have my current stocker relocated down low so any other alternator would have to have teh smae mounting points. Anyone ever go smaller? What did you use?

Re: can I get a smaller alternator?

Late model cars need large alternators because of the large amount of electronics they carry. The older TPI cars use a smaller case alternator that is available in an 120 amp version. I wouldn't install a lower output alternator on a street driven car. If it's a track only car you could get away with 60 amps or so, but I wouldn't try it on a street car.

Why do you want a smaller alternator anyway?

Re: can I get a smaller alternator?

well my current stocker has quit... actually it went out a while ago but I am just getting around to it now.

It is a race car, no street use at all. I figured if I have to replace it I might as well save some weight and get something smaller and lighter. A great deal of the electronics in the car are no longer there. No radio, heater, ac, defroster, ect... But all the engine related electronics are still there.

I am just looking for a replacement that will cut a few pounds off the front end. And by the looks of it I might be able to get an older 100 amp unit from a TPI car in chrome for a reasonable price... and they only weigh 12 lbs. I just dont know if it will bolt up... I guess I really need to see one up close and personal to know for sure.

Re: can I get a smaller alternator?

do you have any pics of your relocated alt? I am going to put mine down where my air pump used to be and was wondering how i was going to do that. Did you buy a kit, or was it a homemade type thing?

The TPI unit will bolt up with minimal modifications. I believe the distance between the two mount bolts is a little shorter.

Re: can I get a smaller alternator?

Sorry no I dont have any pics. But if you search under SJM I am sure you can find a link to the site. I bought the relocation bracket from SJM. It relocates it to where the a/c should be. Since its a race car I dont have anything else, just an alternator. You could make one yourself but I just figured it was easier to just buy one already made.

I think if the mount bolts are closer it wont work, even if they are still clocked 180* apart. I still need to have the mount points the same or I will need to make a custom bracket.

Re: can I get a smaller alternator?

i guess you could put it anyway you want as long as the pulley and belt line up, right? I plan on putting mine where the air pump was. I guess I will make a custom bracket out of some thick aluminum

Re: can I get a smaller alternator?

Yeah that is a nice alt but its just waaaay out of my price range...

I did some more reasearch and the cs130 is avalible with the same mounts at the cs144. I can also get it in the 85 amp version and cut a few lbs off the front end and it will bolt right up. I'm going to order one and see how it works out. I'll post back with the results.

BTW, I also found this on the net.

$60 for a low mount alt on an LT1 isnt bad...

So this is the AC delete Alternator relocation bracket I've been hearing about? Man I just hate losing the AC, my new setup being built right now is getting Jessel shaft mounts and my understanding is that they take up all the longitudal space under the valve covers (tall), which means you cannot have the front behind the alternator modified. I hear someone has come up with a 1" spacer method which you space behind the stock bracket and also the Dampner. I just don't know what if any harmonic balance issues would be involved, don't think I even have the room with the dual 1" core radiator in the car now.

Do you or anyone know of a bracket that allows the alternator to relocated to where the old air pump was located? It allows you to keep the AC supposedly.

Re: can I get a smaller alternator?

Brettinator, your box is full...

The bracket I used was from speed specialty and deletes the A/c. They have another one that goes on the other side of the engine that doesn't.

Here's a link:

Re: can I get a smaller alternator?

I am running an alternator from a 94 Caprice with the smaller alternator. It is a 105 amp unit and bolted in fine. I had to use my pulley though.
ost parts stores stock this one. Be careful because there are different styles availible for the same year. maybe this link to NAPA s website will help the part number is BSHAL8663X http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPage...rnator+-+Remfd
