Can anyone explain this? (coolant)
Ok the other day I was letting my car warm up when I smelled antifreeze. I looked under the hood and antifreeze was on top of my intake elbow
since then I haven't seen any more antifreeze but sometimes I can smell it. My car doesn't overheat, but the gadge goes up and down alot. It will go up to *210 then back down to *180. Before this it always stayed at *180. Well last night night my low coolant light came on and I had to add some (still I can't find a leak). I am gonna take it to be looked at, but thought I'd post here for some thoughts.

Squeeze around the hoses were your coolant travels, look for cracks or splits. Maybe under perssure your loosing coolant. If not then look at the weep hole on the water pump to see if any is coming out there. The only way you have coolant at the elbow is the belt is throwing coolant around the engine bay.

I agree with Vinny. The water pump likes to leak out of the weep hole and after you shut if off, it will drip right on the crank pulley. Then when you start your car the next time, it will sling the coolant and you might even hear the belt screech for a for a few seconds.
Of course, you could have a pinhole leak that is squirting coolant almost anywhere.

Maybe your thermostat stuck closed and then engine got a bit hot and spewed some collant??
Maybe your temp going up and down is the thermo still a bit sticky or your coolaing system now has some air in from what ever caused the first thing.
I would check all of the hoses very carefully, fill my coolant resovoir to the proper point, pop the rad cap add what ever it will take then bleed the system as per proper procedure being careful not to get coolant on the opti.
You do not want to over heat the engine as warped heads can be a result.
