can the alternator be painted

I've always heard if your alternator was case grounded that you should not paint it for it can't produce the current well. Is this true, and more importantly is this true for our cars, I have painted my engine all black, so I would like it the same color. I know I could polish it up real fast, but it wouldn't match the black very well.
