Can a 95 Z be out of time ?

I have a 95 Z28 LT1 and when i go to start it, it seems like it "grunts" to get started. is there a way that it can be out of time? or is this a sign that the opti-spark is going bad?
btw, i have a new Optima red top battery in it.
thanks!

It can't be out of time in the same sense that a rear mounted SBC distributor engine would be, if that is what you mean. Does it run ok after it starts? Need more description.

yeah, it runs fine after it's started.
it's just the startup thing that's got me puzzled.

Without more description, starter or battery cables could be suspects.

Optima batteries haven't been good to me. Most ppl have no prob with them though. I think it might be the Advance Auto parts that I got the batteries from.

do you mean it will fire, then pause then continue running cause mine does this also, and i would love to figure out why mine acts this way, also mine seems hard to start as in i will let the fuel pump prime then if i don't finagle the ignition the right way it will not turn over but if i feather the ignition at first and let off real quick i can get it to run

That sounds like an ignition switch adjustment problem or a switch about to go out.

Look at the ignition switch R&R on my Tech Page. That should give you some info.
