Can 3 miles do this much damage?
Can 3 miles do this much damage?
Fellows if you have seen my other posts, my car was overheating and a idiot drove it while it was in the red. The car was drove about 3 miles in the red, and I had a guy took a quick look at it and he is claiming I have a "100 things" wrong with it. Can just driving it 3 miles cause this much major damage. Couple buddys do my car work for me, but they havent looked at it yet because in order for them to do it I am going to have to have the car towed to them, and if it ends up being as bad as this other guy claims Im going to have to turn around and go back and get it because I sure cant afford to have that much major work fixed. BTW, that guy that took a quick look at it said I have a melted water pump, radiator shooting out water, he assumes the head gaskets are blown, and a bunch of other stuff. Its a 97 z.
Re: Can 3 miles do this much damage?
I would at least get a second opinion, he sounds like he is exaggerating on some things. I personally have never seen a "melted water pump", maybe some other more experienced veterans can correct me though? 3 miles may not seem like much, but it is a hit-or-miss situation, some people can drive in the red for a little while and nothing may happen, others may do the same thing and they will crack their block or blow a head gasket. Either way, I would get a second opinion first.

i would def. get a second opinion on it but yes three miles could do alot of damage...my friend drove for two miles on the red and warped his heads but like that other kid said its a hit or miss thing ...i herd that your intake gasket is also one of the first things to go so that shoudl be something to look into also

Yea a possibility of a warped head(s) is greatly increased in LT1's since they are reversed cooled. But tearing it apart is probably the only way of finding out.

Was it just "in the red" or was it pegged past the red zone? I drove for about 4 miles in in the red before I noticed. I didn't have any problems after. Even a year later when I tore the top end off to put on new heads the gaskets and everything looked A-ok. However, your mileage may vary. my car was only "in the red" It wasn't pegged past the red zone. So it was only at 250-260. I don't think the fans even come on until 220 stock.
Re: Can 3 miles do this much damage?
Sounds to me like he's saying. "I don't know what's wrong with it, but if you pay me a lot of money I'll replace some stuff and find out". Get a second opinion to be on the safe side.
Re: Can 3 miles do this much damage?
If it was pegged as high as it would show, it could of been 300+ degrees and if it was there for 3 miles, them chances are really high of something major going wrong. Now a melted water pump, I don't know if I have even heard of that before.
