Camshat dowel pin length from a 93 to 95 Vented style

I converted a non vented Opti to a 95 Vented Opti and need to know what is the minimum and maximum length of the dowel pin. Right now mine is a .240" from the face of the cam (cam is a Hot Cam so it is drilled for the new Opti), and I measured from cam bolts to to the tip of the dowel and it is .160". Physically you can see it will be able to turn the opti with no problem, and it looks as if .620 is actually to far out. So, if it can turn the opti, is it okay, or is it possible it is too short, even though you can see it fits?

My stock cam pin length was ~ .650 from the face of the cam. I measured the protrusion of the stock pin from the face of the stock cam gear to be ~.410. It is said that the dowel pin length can be .685 for the vented opti.

Thanks, I am going to put it back together as is. The pin fits in the opti just fine, and we'll see if there is a priblem later. Nothing in the service manuals from GM say ohterwise, and the DYNASPARK says a maximum of .600 basically. SO we'll see. Thanks again.

The GMPPs catalog has a tech foot note saying dowel for 95+ opti should be no longer than .620" , and yes, the Dynatech folks say it should be no longer than .605".

Since I have a DynaTech opti and want to keep the warranty good, I set mine for just under .605"

It must be just long enough to get the job done. If it is too long, it will shorten the opti's life.

It seems .620 is conservative, since my stock one was .650 and easily could have been longer (judging from the witness marks on the inside of the opti drive).
Not sure of the validity, but the .685 value is supposedly taken from GM blueprints.

I hear ya.

I wonder where DynaTech got the .605" business. It is not a typo on their literature or website. I spoke directly to Phil an engineer as he went out of his way to emphasize setting the correct length.

How long is truly too long based on others actual experience?

what did you do to shorten the pin? replace it or just grind it?

Grinding it is a quick solution.

I just mesured mine it is huge .593 from the face of the cam sproket. just guessing the cam sproket is probbaly close to .2 that make my pin from the cam face somewhere around .8XX that might explain why my car kills opti's every 3000-5000 miles.

Well, yeah. That's why I have the warning in the beginning of my cam install guide. My Comp Cams cam came with a .840" pin. Compare the CC on the right to stock.

Until a day ago? Wow. This info has been around for quite some time. Maybe this will take care of your problems.

Lol, the text is green and the "check the dowel pin length" is in red.
I can make it flash if necessary, though.
