Camshaft and roller rocker help

I have a 95 Z28. K&N cold air intake, Hypertech PPG III, elimated muffler with custom dual exhaust. I am looking to replace the stock cam for more low and mid range power. What is the best setup and approx how much should I expect to gain in HP and TQ. Also, what does a mod like this cost in labor?

Re: Camshaft and roller rocker help

On a 95 I would say do it yourself or don't do it. (Unless you are loaded) I have seen from $500 (friend of a friend) to @ $1500 for a dealer/large shop to do it.

As far as power... do lots of reading and decide what you want. Call Dave at CMS, they have a cam that LOTS of people are running that has good low/mid power.

As far as the "best" you are going to get a bunch of opinons, but if you're out for increased mid and top while maintaining low end, I'd suggest going with either the Crane 104227, 210/224 on 112 with 1.6rrs 510/552 lift or perhaps the SLP 51002 218/224 on 114.

Go with springs like the dual cranes 99893.

These are obviously not big cams, but they work nicely for street and strip.

I have the 210/224 on my 97SS and it's an RV cam so it's a real stump puller.

Going with the larger cams you are going to lose a bit of the LT1/s famous out -of- the hole torque. They don't have much of a lope (almost stock like) but when nailed they do get it on.

All depends on what you want.

Generally a cam swap might take about 15 hours labor, so at 60-70/hr your looking at between 800 to a grand (not including the valve train work (1.6RRs and springs).

Dump the HPP and get yourself a mail order tune, the 210/224 is an easy one to tune. The SLP is probably easy too.

As far as RWHP, probably between 315-320 with the 210/224.

Carl Capri had the 210-224 on his vert along with cnc'd heads, Lts and a dyno tune and dialed in at 357 RWHP. Not too bad for a baby cam that drives like a stocker.

I didn't want to ever say I went too small. But power/speed wise mine does no better than yours. I get plenty of lope.... But I also got an awesome deal on my setup.

Oh, there is also the Hot Cam, but I bel ieve it is a single pattern cam, I.e, the exh and Intake are the same, whereas a dual pattern cam (where the exhaust has a longer duration and higher lift than the intake might be preferable on a stock head where the exhaust ports aren't the best in the world. If you were going with a good aftermarket head with great exhaust, then the single pattern cam would probably give you more power. JMHO
