Camming a 120k mile motor?
Camming a 120k mile motor?
I am purchasing a shortblock with high miles on it to replace my current motor(bad bearings). I only plan on having the motor in the car for a year maybe two. If the cylinder walls are all in good condition and the motor held a good oil pressure would it be safe to cam it with a cc305 or the like. The motor will most likely at highest see 400bhp. The motor is from a reputable board member.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Go for it!!
I cammed at 120K and made it to 125K before it broke.
Everyone has different experiences. I know of some barely leaving the driveway and others going for years. If its in good shape, you keep the install clean, and don't go crazy on your rpms you should be ok.
I had my rev limiter set at 6800, and because of our crappy tachs hit it quite a few times before spinning the 7/8 bearings. I do not think rpms killed my motor though, it looks like it was starved of oil first..... pump or something crapped out.

Re: Camming a 120k mile motor?
Oh I plan on having all supporting mods to make sure it lasts. I do not cut corners. I will be installing a few things I will be carrying over to my project motor. Also the cams I am looking at can give good numbers but do not rev very high, low 6k's. I just want to have my car running for spring and summer. I have to drive the fiances 2000 mazda protege right now and my dear god that thing has a axle crushing 90 hp, wooooooo. I cant stand seeing the stangs and rice rockets driving around up here, so I will need something to hold me over.
Re: Camming a 120k mile motor?
i did it at 130k miles. it has 137k miles on it now and i drive the heck out of it, and it has even gone through times where an injector wasn't plugged in or a rabbit ate it so the engine hasn't really had an easy life, but it still goes strong
oh, and its just the gm hot cam in there right now, but i will be putting a bigger one in there pretty soon and running it until i spin that motor to the ground

Re: Camming a 120k mile motor?
I bought a cam and decided against camming my 135K LT1. I am in the process of building a 355, and im using the cam I bought. That way when my engine bites the dust I can just drop in this 355.

Ok thanks for the solid feedback guys. I guess she will be up and running by March. Thank freaking god. OH and I read your rabbit story that was funny as hell.
Re: Camming a 120k mile motor?
I would. Would be a perfect opportunity to get some new valve seals in there and I would also put a new set of springs to replace those tired 120k mile set. Dont forget to do the lifters too and you might as well but a fresh timing chain in there also. A stocker should do fine to keep the cost down. If you have good oil pressure, it doesn't burn any and the motor is currently still pretty tight, it should run well and have some fresh parts.

Re: Camming a 120k mile motor?
Its not that expensive to get a machine shop to install some new cam bearings. But I installed my cam at 90k miles and it got to 120k before I had to pull the block, but it wasnt cam related. I say go for it as well
Re: Camming a 120k mile motor?
The shortblock is not what is currently on my car. I will be putting it on my current top end that has roughly 80k on it, but yes the entire top end is going to be dressed up aswell. Timing chain is going to be replaced aswell.
The only other question I have is will a 3000 stall with 3.42's be too much or would it still fit nicely in the power band.
