Cam swap (to the smaller one :( )

My current cam is 240/246dur. around .575 lift and 112.7 lsa. I don't want to deal with this "bucking" problem anymore. This is the main reason, and there are other reasons for sure. No breaking because of the low vacuum, really bad gas mileage, here there is a big traffic problem .....
Anyway I decided to go with a small cam for my 383cid. I will miss the power coming at high rpms
I think I will go with 224/230dur. 112lsa This will enough for zero bucking or good gas mileage??? Or do I need to go with smaller than this ? This is a 383, so I think it is more than enough.

Also I want to know how much hp will I lose. With my current specs my engine is around 480hp (flywheel). Will I lose more than 50 hp after this cam swap??

Any advice, opinion will be great

thank you

224/230 should be pretty mild on a 383, but i cant tell you for sure if there will be bucking or not. I dont think there will.

Bucking means you need more tuning and maybe more gear.

Low speed bucking or all the time?

bucking could also be burnt plug wires, do you have a blinking SES light when it "bucks"?

Bucking or Surging mainly happens at lower rpms when you have a bigger cam. A lot of it can be taken care of with careful tuning, but its kind of the price you pay to have a big cam in a street car. It will be much worse with a manual tranny of course. What kind of tune do you have?

don't give up on that cam. find your issue and get it delt with. that cam should be just fine.

I don't have SES light. I know there is no problem about ignition. No burnt plug wires.

Let me explain the bucking: I can't drive around 20mph without pressing the clutch pedal. When I accelerate its not a problem, but as I stated above in the traffic it is like riding a horse. Because of this in traffic, my clutch suffers, and the engine drinks the gas. Where is the fun ?

I'm pretty sure that should be mild enough. My hotcam doesn't buck at all, and it's 218/228. I almost went with the cam you're looking at.. Comp Cams 503, right? If you throw that in, let me know how you like it.

Sounds like you're shifting too early, dropping RPMs to a spot they don't like.

I have a mail order tune. (Ion)
Here there is no place does dyno tuning. I ordered a wide band LM1 to look A/F. When I calculate the overlap, its 17.6 and I'm not sure that I can get rid of this surging/bucking problem with tuning.

Oh, and "usually" a bit more timing and a bit more fuel right in the spot thats bad will help clear up surging.

I had changed the gears from 2.73 to 3.42 (before the new engine and cam).

Yes I shift later. The problem is while I'm at 1 gear, and cruising around 20mph it s bucking like a horse. So I can't drive around low speeds as there is no smaller than first gear.

I'd take timing out and/or add more fuel. I really think, if you had a competent tuner street tune the car, you'd be happy with it. Honestly, the biggest difference maker in my car was the gears. I went from 3.73's to 4.40's and it made the car much easier to drive.
