Talking Which Cam should I get?

Well, headers are shipping out on the 30th and I am thinking shortly thereafter it will be time for a CAM!!! I am debating between 3 fairly different cams. The GM847, cc306, and XE230/236. For the time being it will be on stock heads, but as soon as I can afford otherwise it wont be. My car Idles at 1000 RPMs as it is so hopefully idle wont be a problem. Basically, which cam should I get and what fuel upgrades should I do along with it? Also, what are people making with these on stock heads. I thought I saw a guy on here pulling 380 with the 847 on stock heads, but I am trying to find it now and can't. I'll keep looking.

Thanks Guys

When I get around to doing my cam swap I'm either going with the cc305 or xe 224/230. I'll be on stock heads for a while, but hope to eventually have them ported by Lloyd. Both these cams seem to be favorites for daily driving

I decided to go with the CC306. I made 354 rwhp and 352rwtq with the following.

stock heads
stock TB
stock intake
jethot longtubes
true 3" dual exhaust
moroso cold air
1.6 rockers
ASP underdrive crank pulley
CSI Electric H20 Pump
and LT1 Edit.

This was with 108,000 miles on my stock short block.

Those are pretty large cams. Do you want this for the street? If so, I would shy away fro mall 3 of your choices.

I would look at something like the XE 224/230, the CC 305, or the hotcam kit. The XE224/230 is great for stock heads.

When you go large like your 3 choices, the powerband is very high in the RPM band and you need to rev high.

When I get a cam, I want it to peak between 5700-5900 rpms, so I can keep good torque down low and I don't have to rev the crap out of my engine. That's me though, you may want a different type of cam.

He's right, they are large cams, but my 306 still operates power brakes and my A/C works performs just as it did before the camswap.

Now here's the thing, when I first turn the car on and drove it after the cam swap, it was not streetable, but after I made some adjustments with LT1 Edit, it is extremely streetable.

I would look at something like the XE 224/230, the CC 305, or the hotcam kit. The XE224/230 is great for stock heads.
The 306 lopes at idle much more than any of those 3 cams, so in that aspect it would "sound" less streetable.
If you do not have 1.6 rockers yet, the LT4 Hotcam Kit is a lower cost alternative since it comes with the aluminum rockers and valve springs.

When you go large like your 3 choices, the powerband is very high in the RPM band and you need to rev high.
I shift at 6200 RPMS. Not revving the crap out of it in my mind. But some people shift this cam much higher, but with my stock heads this is enough RPM for now.

Regardless of which cam you pick you, you will be pleased, personally I think the LT4 Hotcam would be a good "starter" cam for you.

Ahhhh, if it were me, I would go with the gm847 cam. That cam makes awesome power in our cars and is just bad a$$. That is what is goin in my car this winter, with a set of lloyd elliot ported heads. Hoping for 400+ rwhp.

Rock on, thats what I'm thinking. GM847 until I can get Ported and poished heads to slap on top of it. No sense going small and then redoing it, just do it right the first time.

I'm for the GM847 too. A couple of guys on here have had success with this cam on the street with stock heads. With ported heads and the GM847 cam my car drives no different than when I had stock heads and a small cam.

does the GM 847 come in a kit, and is that size cam bigger than the cc306?

alot of guys are saying that the cc306 are to much for stock heads, and yet your saying that the GM847's give you no problems, because i myself want to change the cam in my 96 and want to make sure i have no problems if i buy this cam, i plan not to touch my heads anytime soon

306 here on an LT4, it sounds incredible. Haven't dyno'd yet, still have driveability issues, because of stock TQ converter, I think.

I don't have the numbers for the gm847, but I know the lift is .575/.595 w/1.6 rr's. The duration is pretty big too. But the cam makes awesome power. I'm sure someone knows the rest of the numbers off the top of their head. But it is bigger than the cc306. Like you said, why go small, when you know your going to want bigger. I learned/ am learning that first hand.
