Cam removal need help

Well I have never removed a LT1 hub before. I have already pulled it thinking it would be keyed but it is not. Did not have the motor at top dead center yet. I removed the timing cover and I think I am at TDC on #1. My crank gear is at 12 o'clock and my cam gear is at 12 o'clock. Is this wheir I want to be. Or should they be at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock? Also as long as the opti slides back on the cam key it does not matter if it has been turned does it? Any help would be very welcomed.

Thanks
Jeff

Re: Cam removal need help

When the crank gear is at 12 o'clock the cam gear shuld be at 6 o'clock. Same as on gen I small blocks. Just line up the timing dots together on the sprockets.

As for the opti you are right, it doesn't matter if hte engine has been turned. The opti is keyed - just make sure when you put it on the opti drive keyway is lined up and don't force it on - even though it's keyed if you push with enough force it can go on the wrong way ask me how i know

The two dots should be lined up together.

So since the dots are at 12 & 6 I am just not at the top of the compression stroke? When I line them up it will put me right?

Thanks
Jeff

12 and 6 = #6 TDC
12 and 12 = #1 TDC
at either one (doesn't matter), the hub and pulley go on with the mark at 12. The dots on the gears are only necessary to index the cam to the crank. The opti does not care where anything is as long as you index it to the cam gear or the dowel pin (depending on non-vented or vented opti).
