cam only for racecar

looking to go with a cam only set-up in my 96 T/A. I've done so much research on cams lately that i might be worse off then when i started. anyways, looking to add a cam, for a 95%strip/5% street car. I already have long tubes, cai, 3600 stall, 4.10 in a moser 12bolt, along with weight reduction 33xx pounds raceweight. with all that info what cam should i go with? stock heads/shortblock. i dont give a rat's about driveability and of the three i am choosing cheap & fast. btw, current best is 8.05 in the 1/8th on a 1.65 60 ft. time. thanks

Do you have any future plans for the car? As far as heads go, or any reason to choose the right cam now, and not later?

any future plans for will include a race-prepped motor, and even less street use but that wont be for a year or two. reason for the cam now is because i have the money/time to do it right now and can probably pick-up a used cam for cheap. I would like to make it faster for cheap while i have the time and money to do it.

Get something like a CC306 or a gm847.

Get a custom cam. With a race only car, that would be the only thing I would consider. Check with Lloyd Elliot, AI, or Bret Bauer for a custom cam.

I had a 230/236 112 LSA comp cam back in the day... .545/.555 lift (w/ 1.6s) and I enjoyed it. I believe I ran about a 13.4@104.5 back then with stock rear and 2.06 second 60's. You may say that wasnt that great, but it was at 6000' density altitudes... so it was not bad. If you are near low altitude, you should see high 12s at maybe 110 mph with a good (stock head) cam. Some cams need more head, I wouldn't suggest these but some would argue. Mine was rather large if you ask me for stock heads and stock cubic inch.

The rpm limitations of the stock shortblock aren't going to let you get too carried away.

+1, but i remember 5-6 years back someone ran a SR with stock heads and bolts ons made 385rwhp. Dont recall if it was a m6 or a4 which would make a big difference, but regardless he made those numbers.

With the amount of strip use your planning it may not be a bad route to go.

He has a rebuild in mind, so that is all the more reason to get a higher spinning cam. Not only that but if its going to be a race engine as he says, the cam can take advantage of the new heads (assuming he is getting new heads).

A lot of cam questions lately, its really hard to choose someone elses cam haha.

thanks for the input so far. seems like with most cam questions, driveability/emissions/reliability are major factors, which is why the cc503 type cams are so popular. this is mainly a racecar that gets maybe a hundred "street" miles a month, so all out performance is what i am concerned with. and as i said of the three, the two that i am picking are cheap and fast.

There's really no such thing as "cheap" when you are talking about newer style, roller motors.

Ive owned or at least dealt with a lot of the shelf grind cams out there
and am currently using a cc306
the gm 847 i had in a six speed car 355 and ported heads it almost felt like the car had turbo lag lol off the line it was a dog but came on STRONG at around the 3300 rpm mark and had an insane top end charge
cc306 is an awesome cam as well have it in a 3600 stalled auto stock cubes and heads it seemed like a large cam for the motor but still had a great power curve and my buddy had one in a 383 with heads and it was a total diff monster rediculous power and torque from idle to redline that was also with a 3600 stall and 4l60e
cc503 is about the best STREET cam i have seen but i dont think you would be satisfied it doesnt sound like a race car or drive like one lol
