Oh ya and stay the hell away from those xe grinds i hated my old 230/236 my new setup will be with a 306.
I loved my XE 227/233 on a 114lsa.

Made 302/304 pulling to 5450 on STOCK manifolds and tuned to a 112lsa cam. Torque was above 300 from 2000 to the end of the pull. I had LITTLE cam surge at 1200 rpms and ABSOLUTELY NONE in 5th and 6th gear at ANY rpm... It sounded pretty good, didn't lope crazy, but all I had aftermarket on my exhaust was a loudmouth catback.

Wow, I sure love my XE224/230 on a 112lsa. It really sounds nice and pulls real hard.

Sorry if i affended anybody about the xe grinds. I think its mostly just the 230/236 that has gave people problems. Mine wouldn't pull at all past 6k and it was supposed to be a good top end pull cam. At about 5k was were it would peak and then it would keep going at about the same rate untill 6k were it fell flat on its face.

I'll second that. I had the exact same cam and it fell on it's face 6400rpm. I mean it just died! I tried everything. Hydra rev, really stiff springs, etc. Nothing helped. I was sure it was valve train stability as you could hear the valve train get noisey when the power fell off, much like valve float (which it may have been) but with 145 seat pressure and a rev kit??? Made good power though at 392rwhp without any real tunning. Now I've got an xe solid roller and that cam rocks. Pulls cleanly to 7k. Makes peak hp around 6300-6700.

I run the CC305. With stock manifolds it idles like stock almost. Vacuum level is good, compatible with stock PCM settings. The hotcam has slightly rougher idle.

Ditto that. My cam from Bret is awesome, smaller than my old XE and makes way more torque. The car also has great drivability.

I always hear you mention that part about the tune as if it really affected the power. I don't think it would. I'm running on the same tune my buddy has on his 224/230 car and my LSA is totally different as well as the duration.

Compatable maybe but still a **** poor idea. I have said it a hundred times and it seems to need constant repeating a stock car can benifit from aa tune and modified benifit FAR more. It is nothing short of stupid to spend hundreds if not thousands on parts and then skimp on $50-200 for the tuning needed to pull it all together properly. A local put a large Comp grind in his 97SS I think it was a high lift 230/236, he was diappointed in how it ran till I cobbled together a tune for him my halfassed attempt was so much better than stock that he immediately went home and ordered a madz28.com tune which made a further improvement. In a lot of instances if you do the cam first without a tune later gewtting the tune will gain you as much as the cam did so just do them together and make the car run right.

Yea, I am looking into a cam alot right now, and I see that Brets are the way to go. Make more TQ/HP with usually a smaller cam size and you dont have to rev to the moon either.
