Which Cam/Heads for 400 rwhp?
Re: Which Cam/Heads for 400 rwhp?
Ported AFR 227's and the GM 847 cam (Part # 12370847). Overkill, but it would do it. Or you could do what 96capricemgr said and talk to Loyd Elliot. I think his stage II and III heads cam packages both make well over 400rwhp.
Re: Which Cam/Heads for 400 rwhp?
You will definitely wanna stoick with stock LT1 castings and port them.
Just give me (Lloyd Elliott) or AI a call and see what we offer. I am sure both of us can do what you are looking for.
Our LE2 cam has repeatedlty made 400-415 RWHP on stock bottom ends and only needs a LOW,LOW 230 duration cam to do it. This set up has LOTS of low and mid range power too and can work with mild gear and stall where as most people makinhg 400 RWHP are using a much larger cam to do it that requires more gear, stall and a higher shift RPM to work well.
RWHP #'s are one thing but it is better to get with who ever you trust and have them designa head and cam package that will proiduce a TQ curve that will accelerate YOUR car well with YOUR gears, stall, weight, etc.

Re: Which Cam/Heads for 400 rwhp?
From his sig it looks like hes going through a manual tranny. 400 shouldnt be difficult at all if you go with ported stock castings and a custom designed cam grind from either Lloyd or AI. If you want 400 with an off the shelf grind i have seen it done with cc306 and 847 but it always seemed as though those guys had to work a lot harder for it. Over 400 RWHP using heads/cam packages from Lloyd and AI is becoming down right common on these boards. Both outfits seem to have the formula figured out for the 400 club. Give them a call, you wont be dissapointed.

Re: Which Cam/Heads for 400 rwhp?
If all you are looking for is 400 rwhp then a small cam like the LE1 will get you there with ported stock castings. I'm putting down 380 approx. with that cam. If I get LE2 heads but stay with the same cam, I could probably put down 400 rwhp, probably more. The important thing is to have all the other supporting mods done, like larger injectors, RR's, etc.

...Also don't get too bogged down with peak numbers...Unless you are building an all out race car, remember the area under the curve makes for a great street/strip ride...

Re: Which Cam/Heads for 400 rwhp?
This is very true, BUT both vendors being discussed here not only have a solid reputation for delivering this kind of number but also for helping customers put together some fast cars.
Re: Which Cam/Heads for 400 rwhp?
I was not knocking either of the vendors at all as they are highly respected and put out good products/customer service, etc. I was just adding that if given the choice of having a 400 hp peak at 6500 rpm or a 390 peak at 6000 with more area under the curve...I'd go with the 390 and not worry so much about the peak number. I see many people get too caught up in numbers...Just adding my .02....
