CAM, can i do it or should i pay
is there any other cam kits then the lt4 hot cam, i want somthing a little bigger and im running stock heads. Can i do it myself or is it worth it to just pay a shop. what is a good price for the install. any feed back will help, thanks
Well i don't mean to be mean or unhelpfull but you should really use the search button. You will find hundreds of post about different cams and such. But the good ones for a daily driver with stock heads would probably be. Hotcam, cc305, xe 224/230, their are a lot others but thats all i could think of at the time. As for installation i can't help you there.
I have not done a cam change, but, I did just change my water pump and opti. After you remove the opti, the cam, is sitting right there. I know I thought to myself the only thing I have to do is remove the intake and radiator out and I could remove this thingie. In looks like a all weekend event for the 1st timer like myself, but I tell you what, it does look do-able, very do-able.
you can do it, but as the others said you might need to buy more tools, although this is only a fraction of the cost of labor if yo pay someone else. Its really not hard only time consuming, you must remember where wires hook up and bolts go, but its not bad if you mark them and put them in bags. The install looks more intimidating than what it is. You must be careful not to get dirt and junk inside the engine, and be careful about parts you remove and the steps in which you do them. This isn't bad considering all the guides and books out there, plus you can always post a quick question if you get stuck somewhere. I was qouted a price of 900 dollars plus parts, which for me was 600 bucks. So had someone installed them I wuld have been out lots of money. By the way combination motorsports in the vendor index can put together a cam package for you for about hundred bucks more than the hotcam kit, this way you have better parts with a more stout cam all in a kit that will work well. As for selection, it depends on how much power you want and how streetable you want the car to be, the bigger cams will make gobs of power, but will suck on the street, and you will hate their bad qualites, a nice street cam is the ex224/230 I wouldn't go bigger than a 230/236 for the street
I did it myself, and it went pretty well. I am however pretty mechanically inclined and had a set of tools handed down to me to die for.
Autozone also rents out tools for free that you will need like spring compressors.

"You con do it" Meng!!!!!!!!
cc 305 cam
Only "streetable" way to go...just remeber to get new valve springs!!!!! Comp recomends their 986-16 springs for that cam. Also while u got her apart u might wanna consider an Electric W/P. I did mine all at the same time, the only bad thing about doing a cam is that u gotta get the AC system vacummed/flushed out and and recharge it. other than that its a great way to "wake" that LT1!!!!

Ive heard a few people say they did it without removing the AC core coil but I really dont see how you could pull the cam without removing the core.....I suppose you could try it though.
I rotated the condensor out of the way with no problems. I didn't have to remove the hoodlatch though.
You can do the cam swap, just make sure you have a way to get around. Cam isn't too bad, heads and cam is pretty rough though.
