A cam...

This is going to seem like a stupid question, but i've been pondering this a lot.

I always thought that it'd be stupid to do a cam without a set of heads because of the trouble of opening everything up to that spot. But after hearing a few cars with some nice loping, and seeing that a decent set of heads is about 1800$, just a cam along with the power gains seems almost inevitable to my car. Now, my question is...

If i'm looking to run lets say... mid to early 12's. Which would be the best cam to keep it streetable? Now, mind you this is a daily driver and it snows here. I want to hear a nice lope and see a respectable power gain. I was think Hotcam or CC305 but a bit unfamiliar with cams because i'm sort of new to this stuff. Also, running those times, with the occassional CHEESY burnout, like letting the tires smoke for a 1/2 second before disengaging... while launching at a track. You think a 12 bolt or 9" is in need here?

Thanks, and sorry if you think the questions are stupid... :-/

Re: A cam...

Since you have a 6 speed car, I would recommend the combination motorsports comp cams xe grind of 227/233 with 560 and 569 lift. I just installed this cam recently, and am very happy with the lope and streetabilty for this cam. It is much more aggressive than the 305 or hotcam, but the street manners are still very good, and I am currently just running a hypertech pp program. Once it is tunned should be very smooth on the street with no cam surge at all, although I dont have much now. Call dave up at combination motorsports, and he can fix you up

Re: A cam...

I will say try the 846. On the heads LT1 heads flow very well to start with that is why just a cam swap can work well, in the 80s heads sucked so bad that they were maybe worth doing right off the bat, but the LT1 stuff is so good that stock with little valves they outflow all the old musclecar era big valve crap by a safe margin.

I have the crane 210/224 on order, and as soon as it comes in I'm going to have it put in. I'll let you know how I like it after its put in.

Re: A cam...

Well... what about the Hotcam and CC305? I hear others suggested, but from what I was reading earlier, they are great gains and very streetable. The others I will take into consideration too, just more confusion I guess... L0L I just want 12's, drive in snow, and not break my rear!! L0L

Re: A cam...

I tried to pm you HuskersZ... heres what I asked.

The cam you purchased, what else did you have on your car? You notice that much of a power gain? You drive it in the rain yet? What i'm most worried about is driving it in the rain/snow and not shredding my rear if I launch it.

Well you won't hear any complaints from me with my Hot Cam. I ran consistant 12.30's @ 109-110 mph with a 3200 Vigilante converter on stock heads. I absolutly LOVE the road manors of the Hot Cam. The car has great low end and with the converter really moves up top too. Some people will say go bigger but If you are like me, and it sounds like you are towards what you want from the car, then I think you too would love the Hot Cam. Now I keep playing with the Idea of putting in a bigger cam to run a better # at the track but then I go for a nice cruise with the car and change my mind every time I crack the throttle on the streets. It in reality is plenty of cam for what I enjoy doing. Now if I do end up wanting to race the car hard at the track then I would go bigger but for now it is perfect...I got my Hot Cam Kit from Jason Cromer out of Florida for around $460 shipped to my door. Hard to beat that deal anywhere. Check my sig. You will see the kit spread out in my pics in the link...

Good Luck in your choice whatever it may be...

Re: A cam...

Hi Eddie :P

Another great option for a well-mannered cam which performs great is the 224/230 XE Grind from Comp Cams paired up with a set of CC Pro Mag 1.6 RR's.

I've gone as fast as 12.06 @ 112.81 on bone stock heads with my A4 (2800 stall). Car is very well mannered on the streets. I've been daily driving it for the past few months while i wait to get myself a daily hopefully soon, and have had no problems.

As far as your 6spd / rear combo goes, it's a crapshoot. If you're going to want low 12's you're gonna need to 60' well, and doing ***** burnouts and weak launches aren't gonna get ya there.

Vid of my car w/ the 224/230:

Re: A cam...

Hey Chris. In reply to your message. No, the car hasnt been in the rain as it is garage kept and not my daily driver although it could be if I wanted it to. Seriously, give dave a call up at combination motorsports, and he can fix you up with what you need based on emissions, drivabilty, etc. Their web is cmotorsports.com. As far as power goes, I did alot of other stuff with the cam. Went to electric waterpump, true double roller timing chain, 1.6 rockers with the cam, and had the stock heads lightly worked. The 227/233 is the hot choice for 6spd cars right now, and will work very good with stock heads or worked heads in the future. The cam has very good drivabilty, and also sounds mean. Also, like javier said the 224/230 would be a good choice also. The hotcam and the 305 are now old technolgy, and the new xe comp cams with the steep ramp rates produce better throttle response and low end grunt than the older cams. Give Dave a call up, he is very nice, and can steer you in a good direction based on your needs.

Re: A cam...

So a 227/233 would be ideal for what i'm trying to do? Streetability in snow/rain while being able to haul ***?

Still wondering about the rear. Will it require a 12 bolt or 9"? I want mid to low 12's.

Re: A cam...

I like my 227/233, but I do have 4.10 gears, and am not sure if you are running the stock 3.42. The cam for me is very streetable, and like I said, I plan to get a good mail order tune later this week, and most have indicated that it will get rid of what little cam surge that I have. Just call dave up at combination, they are the most knowlegable and friendly company that I have dealt with and also the best price apples to apples. They are located in vegas, and their number is 702-798-8504 and ask to speak with dave. Tell him your mods ie. exhaust, gears, and what you want from the car, and he will help you pick the cam that you need. If you need any other help, let me know.

Since you have to pass emissions in NJ, your pretty much limited to the CC305, the hot cam, or something smaller. All those other larger cams don't have much of a prayer of passing emissions.

As far as driving in snow and rain with a big cam. It's really no big deal because as the cam gets bigger, the bottom end gets weaker. Less low end torque means it's easier to drive provided you kep the revs down.

Re: A cam...

I hear good things about the Joe O' small cam & the 224/230 XE cams seem to do awesome jobs.

Re: A cam...

I talked to Dave today and he suggested a 227/233. He said that should put me at 350 - 360rwhp at the wheels and if my motor was maintained, 380rwhp is possible which to me is freakin insane and beyond what I imagined. He took the cam along with a full exhaust and a good tune for a rough estimate of what I could be looking at. I was looking for 330rwhp and like 380lbs of torque and god damn... score But with a similar setup like that, how much torque am I looking at?

But my question is... How much of my low end will be taken away? I enjoy flooring it at like 1500 in first/second and still feeling some nasty power on just a stock motor. I can't freakin wait to throw in my Jet Hot LT's!! But... it did make sense that less low end/higher high end = Better streetability... doesn't it?

3rd thing is... if I do sfc, Spec 4 Clutch, and decent traction... you think mid 12's are in the bag?
