CAI question, am I dreaming????

Some one pinch me because I have to be dreaming! Ok I have the stock air box with a K&N drop in. I desided to look at the assembly and was considering making a home made job for now. Well I pulled everything out to see what I had to work with. I came accross this peace..

I pulled it out and was left with this huge half moon opening in my filter housing that was larger then my fist. Hmmm I already have the K&N filter.. Lets slap everything back in there minus that piece, that will put that large opening in the same place a CAI filter would be what the heck.. Took her for a spin.. Well without a dout better throttle responce.. No it cant be.. Then I notice after letting the car idle for about 20 the engine temp hasnt changed at all. (i still have the stock tstat so the motor temp would rise to about 210 when idling).. Has anyone else done this? It just seems way too simple to be true?

Are you talking about the squarish plastic piece that vents air to the airbox?

I guess you just removed the airbox extension, and you really won't be gaining anything by it's removal. Sorry.
