Any shorty, AS&M mid length, you can get away with FLPs, they have smog hook ups and a dual cat Y pipe. Same withh Jet Hots, but you'll need a Y pipe made for two cats if you decide to keep it legal.

Any long tube header is automatically illegal in CA. The only legal type of headers are shorty headers. Some brands include SLP, Arizona speed & Marine, Hooker, Mac and edelbrock. I have probably missed a few. Most of these should be California legal BUT..............some of the headers I listed come with a CARB sticker (you need it to pass smog) and some dont. The only one I know for sure that does is SLP. Make sure you do a search on the LT1 forum about the carb sticker for headers.

Good luck to you, everytim I think about getting headers I get indecisive and can't choose.

OH YEAH!!

Your car is a 96. You have the 2 cat setup, some of the headers I listed only make 93-95. The only difference is the way the headers hook up to the rest of your exhaust, namely the catylitic converters.

Well I have a 96 Z28 with Dual cats and I was interested in the SLP coated headers. I want to pass visual and smog. I dont mind swapping the stock dual Cats in to pass a visual or smog but I wasnt sure if the stock cats will fit to SLP headers. As you can see..I'm new to the header thing.....

So what do you recommend then?

THANKS

I think all dual cat car headers are going to be PITA's but i would probably run SLPS. They are at least 1 3/4" primaries.

I think he meant to spell "SLP's", not SLPS

I wouldn't not go for a particular type of header just because one guy said "they suck" with no explanation.

JetLag - yeah i hear ya. I'm not quick to be steered off my decisions but Im always up for a new suggestion and willing to check it out if someone shoots their opinion out my way. I'm pretty much stuck on the SLP or BBK. I'm pretty dialed in on getting the SLP shorties but the reason why I havent gotten them yet cuz im still trying to see what everyone else has out there. I still havent heard all the comments about the slp's. I actually heard they are a really good header so I might just end up gettin em but I'm a patient dude. My money is hard earned and I dont wanna have any regrets after a $600 purchase..

SLP's plug and bolt access is garbage. Honestly though, if you have some experience working on the car, the driver's side is not too difficult. It's the passenger side that's the PITA.

I was in the same boat as you, I wanted to stay legal... if I were to do it again I would find a shop that would smog me or find a hookup or something and get Jet Hot LT's with EGR and without AIR. But if you don't want to go through the hassle then just stick with the SLP's.

quicktimeperformance.com will have emissions legal long tubes if they can get ten people interested. check them out before you make a decision. they have built in cut outs with the long tubes. and from what i can tell they are a good build quality. i want a set but i need 9 more people to go in on it

He's got a '96.... can you imagine the routing of the primaries to keep the cats in the stock position (to be legal)?
