A/C Compressor Problem

Last summer my A/C started blowing hot for a while, then it would blow could for a few days. It went back and forth and now it just blows hot.

I checked the check valve and it's fine. I'm finding that my compressor is not engaging with A/C on and I've got an annoying squeak...but that just started a couple of weeks ago. AC's been out for a year or so.

Can anyobody direct me what to do next. I don't think I'm getting 12V across the terminals on the A/C switch plug...

I'm going to try to pull a code on my laptop, but I have to reinstall Windows first :-/

Anybody help?

TIA

Sean

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

Oh, I put a guage on the low side and I'm getting 32 psi...remember the compressor is not running. Should be over 100, right? Safe to say I have no freon left?

So, to check for leaks, I have to charge the system, right? Doesn't the compressor have to run to charge the system, though? Do I have to jump the relay??

thx

Oh...I'm getting a hissing sound from the lo side port after removing the guage...is this normal?? It's just faint but you can hear it....

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

Low side should be 25-45 psi......

High side is releveant to the ambient air temperature......

if you could read both it would be eaiser to see what was going on.....

oh yeah shouldn't hiss either...

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

Your psi should be closer to 80-100 from what I have seen. So it looks like it's low so you may have a leak. Does your compressor come on at all? Do your Fans come on when you turn the A/C on?

Low and High side should even out when A/C compressor is not in operation.

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

low and high will even out when the A/C is off AND the car is turned off also.......

Low side operating pressures are 25-45psi on ALL CAR A/C SYSTEMS....

if you could read the high side and the temperature outside, we might be able to help you out some more....

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

OK, the compressor NEVER turns on. I have no DTCs...but I just unhooked the batt anyway...My guage will only measure low side...it won't fit on high side unfortunately.

Fan's are NOT turning on when I put AC on.

It's 80 outside with close to 100% humidity...outer bands of the hurricane are over us right now.

I just unhooked the batt cable for 5 minutes and it didn't help. It should have kicked on for a little bit, right?

Pressure switch? Should I jump terminals of relay or press switch?

Thanks for the help....

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

OK, I just pulled my AC relay and I'm not getting a ground on the 4th terminal where the relay goes when I turn the A/C on...this should become a ground if other computer input is OK...this is from a post in a thread by HBHRacing...

So it's looking like another switch keeping the PCM from turning on...unfortunately my crappy Ease scanner s/w doesn't include A/C information...

Any ideas??? :-)

pressure is too low........ you need to recharge it w/ dye and look for the leak

if you were closer I'd charge it up for you, but Michigan is a little far to go for A/C work........lol

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

Hey Dave, thanks for the offer! Good to have an ASE here :-) You know I was thinking the same thing...I was just gonna recharge it with what I have and go from there. I think I have 2 lbs...I'd have to get the dye tomorrow.

Will it take the freon with the compressor not running?? Or do I have to jump the relay to pull it in?

I'm gonna go try it now...

Thanks!

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

This hissing port...Now I'm down to 25 psi with the system off...I dont' wanna put freon in with this leaking like this! Do I need a new hard line or can a new schrader valve or something go in there?

Sorry for all the questions, guys ;-)

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

OK, I filled her up, and the compressor kicked on and sucked in all 19 oz I had. Now she's at 35 psi when running and blowing cold! This site rocks!!

Next is to get a UV kit and find out what's up.

Dave, how do I change the schrader valve w/o losing all my freon? I read on here that there's a special tool that keeps the freon in...where do I get one? Or will a shop have to do this for me? For now I have the dust cap on there and I think it's holding it in...

Thanks!

as long as the cap has a good rubber seal it will hold fine for now, a A/C shop should have the tool to replace the shrader without loosing everything

to buy the tool, look for places that sell A/C gauges and ask, they might have it

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

Are your fans coming on now when your turn the A/C on?

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

The ac system is a closed system, If you have to replace freon, you have leak. Take your car to a qualified technician and have it checked out, a cheap over the counter guage like you are checking with is not sufficient enough to check it. You need to have the high side checked also. 97whitez28 is right on the pressure. The compressor is a very likely candidate for the leak, as well as your shrader valve, but you should have changed it while there was no freon in the sytem, they like to stick open.

Re: A/C Compressor Problem

Haven't checked the fans...just assumed they'd be coming on.

Thanks, Dave.

Freak, um, yeah, that's all pretty obvious :-/ But thanks for your input...
