a/c compressor locked up?

My compressor locked up. The clutch still moves, but the compressor is still. Its eating the belt and i cant drive. I dont mind not having any air right now so is there anyway to loosen it up so i can drive?

If the pulley freewheels the car should run like normal with the AC off. you can pull the fuse to make sure no one turns it on.
You could also get the AC gelete pully for about 40 bucks and then you would need a smaller belt. But you probibly need one anyway.

Re: a/c compressor locked up?

this happened to me a few weeks ago. what happens is the actual freon pump usually does not seize up, however the pulley bearing (wich turns weather the a/c is running or not) siezes. this of course prevents the belt from turning. my firebird is my daily driver, i didnt want to pay 660 at the dealer for a new compressor, and jason cormer had it for like 280, but of course i had to wait a couple of days for shipping. you can take the serpentine belt off and drive the car since the water pump is shaft driven, however, no power steering, or altenator. manual steering in these cars is heavy as hell. i think im a lot stronger now. luckily i only work five miles from home, so i was able to go a couple of days before having to charge the battery. i do have a yellow top optima , so be careful if you got a cheapy.

i pulled the compressor today and im going to put the delete pulley in its place. Do you have to have a smaller belt? I already bought the regular one.

No i used the stock belt it works good. This also happened to me it was kinda funny i was driving up our local cruise spot and saw my friend he is a tow truck driver and he was picking up a 2002 vette. So i stopped to say hi well i was sitting there all the sudden smoke started pouring out from under the hood. I was like oh **** turned the car off and ran out and popped the hood i look tons of smoke but i dont see anything but here a rice krispie sound? Iam like what the hell? Ten my belt just snapped in half and came flying at me. Wll needles to say i had a tow home and it did not take long for the driver to get there lol

A decent A/C shop should be able to replace that clutch bearing without cracking open the system. Mine ran $200.
