Buying my first used LT1

My lt1 threw a rod so it's time to start the 383 build. I found this 4 bolt main for $250. Thoughts? It came out a wrecked vette that the guy used for the suspension.

Hard to go wrong at $250. Did you pick it up?

Re: Buying my first used LT1

The biggest question you have to answer is how much money do you want to spend on it. Do you have a good machine shop near by? I built a 383 with a new crank, rods, pistons and cam and a host of other goodies like block squared, heads resurfaced with new valves, line bored block, etc. Yes , I have about $2000 in parts in it and more in my engine builder that let me do most of the work. Just so you know, one weakness of the LT1 is oil flow which can be fixed by porting a few places on the head and making sure the cam bearings are installed correctly. Balancing is also recommended as the LT1 came with external balancing. Balance with the flywheel and clutch assembly and switch to internal balancing. The machine shops can help you with that. One last thing I recommend is going to an electric water pump. Good luck with your build.

Oh, when going to 383, make sure you have the clearances for the crank to block. I had to grind a little to make the proper clearences.
