Buying a 111k 1995 Z/28. Problems?

Found a 1995 Z/28 with a blown head gasket. What kind of problems should I expect? Car is a 6spd with minor mods (Exhaust, 160* T stat, MSD, K/N FIPK, etc) and has 111k.

Guy says it ran great before the gasket going. Also, I'm ordering the CC502 (218/224) this week, either for my RS, or the LT1 car. What are your thoughts on that?

Did he say if there was a specific reason why the head gasket blew? Or was it just one of those things that happens?

I would say the ignition and electronics are the biggest problems in these cars. How well it starts up and how it acts at different throttle levels can be clues to what might start giving you problems...

did it blow the intake manifold gasket? if its leaking oil out of the back of the manifold then don't worry, its not that bad of a fix. but you can use it in negotiating.... takes about 4 hours to fix that leak, but not sure where the head gasket was blown.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was assuming it was the head-block gasket. I'll ask to make sure though. Either way, does the motor have to be pulled?

Any thoughts on the 218/224 in a 111k motor?

My friend put a CC305 in a 190K motor. I'd say go for it, head gaskets aren't too tough. Hope I can put mine back together and not have many parts left over.

Heads can be taken off w/out pulling the engine, but it's not the most fun thing in the world, I expect.

As far as the cam, I say go for it. Just be prepared for the inevitable rebuild. - no one can really say whether that will be 100 miles down the road or 100k, though, too many factors. LT1s tend to do very well when properly maintained, if abused they can turn into junk real quick though (true for just about any engine, though).

My vote is for a bigger cam though.

I hope mine lasts for more than 100 miles. I just got the heads off today and they're going to be surfaced tomorrow. Please stock LT1, hold together until your replacement is finished.

Check the link in my sig for pics of the carnage that is/was my stock head gaskets.

Thanks guys! Well looks like the cam is a go I was hoping it would be fine.

If we don't have to pull the motor I geuss it's just a matter of intake, heads! Sweet! Wish me luck guys.

I'm excited!

Ok, with the puny 218/224, and stock everything else, think I'll see another 40-50k out of the stock bottom end? I'll never turn her past 6k.

I don't think it will give you many problems. Just don't try to turn the thing to 7k rpms.

If the LT1 was maintained fairly well, it should still be in good shape, afterall, it is a 350 Chevy. I suggest though doing 2 treatments of this www.auto-rx.com and switching over to a good synthetic such as Mobil 1 0w40 or a 5w40 weight to make sure oil circulation is still good at higher rpms. Assuming all is good, if it makes power to around 6200, 6300, shift it there when racing instead of 6k or lower. It won't hurt it, and it'll help more than you think over 6k shiftoints.
