Found this in a local classified. Is it even worth calling the guy? Good deal, bad deal... any thoughts?

It basically needs an engine overhaul. If the price is right and if you are capable of doing such a job, then it might be right for you.

Sure, depends on the price. I'd say $2k tops in great condition.

Yeah. I called the guy and checked KBB. If I could pick it up for 1750 to 2000 it would be okay, but there are some pretty big holes in the idea.

If all it needed were bearings, that would be okay, but the guy said he'd only owned it for two weeks. Says he bought it with a bad head-gasket. Says he had the heads pulled and gaskets replaced then the car started having a knock in the bottom end. New clutch, great interior, blah, blah, blah.

I'm not sure my wife would be cool with a non-running project in the driveway, and I'm willing to bet it needs more than bearings if it's been overheated and beaten on.

I don't know why I'm even thinking about it- I can't sell my Cobalt anyway.

If your wife might be the least bit concerned----do not even think about it.

Even if someone gave it to you for nothing, you would obviously be considering fixing it up and that's the rub.

You could ---mostly likely---wind up putting tons of money into it (far more than you could get out of it-----do the math.

toasted rod bearings = bad

it can't be both it either runs like a dream or it needs rod bearings. Its like saying the basement needs to be drained of water but the house is in perfect shape.
