Burning Metal Smell???
Burning Metal Smell???
After even one hard launch, or a little rolling run up to red line the smell of burning metal (smells like a welding shop) comes in through the vents.
Also my car doesnt seem to be running as strong as it did when I first got it.
But the engine oil is full and clean. havent checked the transmision yet. (how do I?) its a M6, with the hurst.
Does anyone have any idea's what this could be?

I'm leaning towards possibly a slipping clutch....or it could be your brakes...I know it sounds wierd but a friend of mine kept telling me something was burning in his car after he had gotten on it for a quarter mile or so, he'd notice a smell coming through the vents, kinda like what you're saying, so I rode with him and told him to do exactly what he did...well we did...turns out it was when he'd nail the brakes at 100mph scrub off speed down to 40 or 50, the brakes smelled (which is sometimes normal depending on pads), I told him to do it again and not hit the brakes and sure enough thats what it was....

I dont think its the brakes, cause I only downshift after soemthing like that. but I did test it out, and htey do smell burnt, but a much different smell.
I think it might be my clutch, but how do i really tell?
Afrer I got it up onto the ramps (kinda hard in a M6) it smelled kinda like the same burning smell, but not as strong, so it was hard to tell.

I have an auto so I don't have a pic.
But its a small round container.
If you touch your forefinger to your thumb, thats approx how big it is.

but its about an inch and a half diameter and 3 or so inches deep, and has some black rubber thing inside.
It is full, and it smells like that burning smell, its also a brownish transparent color.

Brown fluid = bad. Flush your Master Cylinder out and put in some new CLEAR dot 3 brake fluid. That might not cure the burning smell, but your clutch fluid shouldn't be brown.

If you drive out the pin in the slave cylinder that holds the hose fitting in, the fluid will just run out from the master. Re-assemble and fill. Bleed by holding the slave with shaft down and press several times in & out on the ground. I can't imagine how brown fluid would have anything to do with a burning odor. It's probably just a hot clutch disk from the launch.

What else could it be?
