Burned Spark Plugs

Please help. I have burned through 2 sets of spark plugs on # 5,6,7,&8 over the last 6K miles. What is the best protection against this? I have spark plug woven fiberglass boot protectors and DEI wire sheating, which has has not done any good. I am going to try the Full Metal Jacket plugs made by Taylor. See the bottom of: http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...vid=4&pcid=104

I am also considering wrapping the AS&M ceramic coated headers with header wrap like found at: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

The Camaro is no fun to drive when it has 6 degrees of spark retard! See sig for other mods and no the car is not running lean or rich...BLMs between 123 and 134.

I have two rolls of the header wrap... 2 inch wide by 50ft X2... so 100 feet... one is brand new in box, the other is opened but brand new... I will sell them for 50 shipped.

I take it you mean plug wires? If so then no matter what kind of heat protection you have on them it's only a matter of time before they'll burn through. The wire CANNOT come in contact with any exhaust component whatsoever. You need to spend some time in trying to find a way to re-route the wires using zip ties if necessary to keep the wires away from the primaries. I'm totally against header wrap, but it does serve its purpose. However I wouldn't use it just to save your plug wires.
You can also go with over-the-valve cover plug wires and that should solve all your wire burning woes.

I've got the AS&M headers and I've found that the stock wire routing is the most effective. OTVC doesnt work as well on these headers due to the layout of the primaries.

I use Taylor Firesleeves on all of my boots, and I havent burned a plug wire in 18,000 miles.

Re: Burned Spark Plugs

The stock routing has been nothing but trouble. First off, the 8.5mm MSD plugs will not fit into the stock harnesses so count those out. Secondly, the AS&M headers have to be the most frustrating headers known to man...I had to jack up the engine just to get them in. Working around them makes me at times want to drive the car off of a cliff. With woven fiberglass boot protectors, DEI sheathing and woven fiberglass sheating on the wires, I have burn 2 sets over the last 6K miles. Can you be more specific and maybe pass on some pictures on how to do the spark plug wires? Does anyone think the Taylor full metal jacket plugs will help?

8.5's are not necessary. Get yourself some 8mm wires and they'll fit the stock clips.

Re: Burned Spark Plugs

I'm also using the MSDs. BTW: It was a huge pain to get the Firesleeves over the boots due to the big MSD molded logo on each boot.

I dont have any pics, but i started by routing using the exact stock wiring locations. Not all of the looms fit the MSDs, but you can kind of stuff them in there and use tie wraps to help out.

Then i looked at all the wires and boots. Anwhere were there was a clearance problem i rotated the boot and tied back wires on each plug to get the maximum clearance from the primaries. Only the #7 cylinder was a real issue -- the firesleeve rests up against the header and has burned through the first layer. However, the boot itself still has clearance and is in good shape.

You may be able to get OTVC to work, but i just could never see how to do it. It looked like you would end up having to have most of the plug boots rest up against a primary no matter how you did it.

Re: Burned Spark Plugs

After pulling my old spark plug wires out which are 8.5mm MSD, I remember I had spark plug wire harnesses that I can no longer use with the fatter wire. Now that I am back to 8mm wires, does anyone know how many of these there are, where they are located, and possibly where you can buy replacements? Pictures wouldn't hurt either.
