i got a 96z w/ 90k and it IS NOT a beater, i take extremely good care of my car, and I come out to my car from the mall and i see a crack in the large plastic grey peice with the defroster vent in it. Anyway, my car typically pops from the dash on bumps and what not, but i've heard this is common , but anyways, my dash has never been taken apart or anything, it is exactly as it came from the factory and it just cracked from the black peice on top of gauges toward the vent about 8 INCHES!!!!! This is insane, i would have noticed it developing, it just happened........WHAT THE HELL? Is this going to keep cracking outward? what should i do? drill a small hole at the end maybe?

On a side note: does anyone know how to stop the dash poping **** anyway?

Yep, they do that. They can crack from sun exposure.

I feel your pain man, my 94 is doing the same way. It started from the passenger side corner (close to the windshield) and has worked towards the center and back down towards the glove box. It looks like total S***! It has finally stopped, only because there is no more to crack where it is! I wonder how hard it is to change the dash anyway. I need to find a used one in good shape from a junkyard for cheap. Do you know how much a new one costs?

heh...this happen to me too in my Lt1 about 3 weeks ago ...... I was running a t-88 Supra and I hit the throttle from 40 roll and when I shifted to third I could hear it cracking.........after the run I was slowing down and I and i looked up at the dash and it had split ....... I busted out laughing because I knew that it was going to do that some day........

that plastic does not take to sun exposer to well and I guess it cant flex more then a few mm before it cracks...

I will find out a price for a replacement tomorrow ..

Unfortunately, a pretty common problem. I got a new one from Jason Cromer for about $90 a few months back.

That's wierd. I have 2 96's and no problems like that. (knock on wood) The very top piece where the defroster vent is, is a seperate piece. Just kinda velcro'd down believe it or not. Odd how they can crack like that, cause i had mine bent all kinds of ways taking mine out and putting it back in when i replaced my dash. (car was wrecked when i bought it and airbags ****ed the dash up pretty good.)

I posted about mine doing this just last week.

Came out from work and it was just split down the middle, from windshield to cluster.

thats weird my dash doesnt pop during driving or cracking.but i keep mine garaged so i guess it doesnt get as much sun.i would try using armoral on all the dash parts atleast once a month in the summer.i think the armoral is uv protectant or sumthin like thatt.

I've always used high quality tanning lotion. Makes a nice dullish shine on the dash and i've got no cracks and my dash has never ever popped or anything. In my mind, it protects better since I believe the Armor Alls and such only magnify the heat and UV on the dash since they are made to shine shine shine. Just my personal experience

Armor all is worse than nothing. All it does is dry out the parts with cheap silicones and solvents. Use 303 Protectant (you can get it at boat shops).

Vinylex works best - has UV protectant and leaves a nice shine.

Never a problem with cracked/worn interiors or dash in any of my cars.

Bought mine from Jason for $90, but the shipping is a killer because it's oversized. Mine new one does snap or pop or do anything and I'm in the Florida heat all year. Make sure all the velcro things are holding it down. Mine's on there so tight it would probably crack trying to get it out.
