Exclamation Build your own bolt-on High Flow cat for $85 plus welding

First, here is a Picture The CAT is not welded yet in the picture, but it is the correct length

I know that this has been done before, but I wanted to show my CAT that I will be using to bolt between my MAC midlength headers ('94-'95 style) and my Hooker Catback.

I didn't feel like spending $200+ for a pre-made High Flow CAT.

All I did was buy a Carsound CAT on EBAY from performancepeddlers. These CATs have proven to have very good flow numbers. This is a nice looking CAT. The Carsound CAT I bought is model 94109. It is 3" in and out. This was $45 shipped.

Then I called MAC and bought a set of 3" pipes with a ball end on one pipe and a flare end on the other. The pipes were each about 6" or so. It also came with two 2 bolt flanges and bolts. The part number on the invoice was TF30. This was $40 shipped.

The Tubing slides into the ends of the CAT. I had to cut a little off one tube. The correct length for my application is 19 1/2 inches overall. This is pretty much the same length that you will get if you order one premade.

All you need to do is take it to a muffler shop and get it welded for a few extra $$$.

Hope this helps.
Dan

Cool deal! I was thinking of doing the same thing, being that I also have the MAC Y pipe, but was trying to find someone that had already done it first. I currently have the MAC ORP, but would like to be able to enterchange to the cat whenever I want and easily. I wonder if you could just put clamps around the ends of the cat instead of weldind it?

For me, I have the bolt up ORP, so it would be nice to just bolt a cat up if I wanted to sometime.

Then you won't be able to remove your catback without cutting it if you ever need to. Plus, that flange also provides a little bit of flexibility. If you weld it in directly, you'll probably have more rattles and/or cracks will form.

BTW, I also bought a carsound cat from ebay and had everything done for $85 including welding back when I had the stock y-pipe.

I just found a use for this 3" Catco I have laying on the floor. Thanks stereomandan. Makes me wanna order some Macs tonight, knowing I have a cat to fit. So if I make that custom Catco for MACs and also order an ORP, they will swap just by unbolting and nothing more right? And can I order the MACs with the ORP from JetHot? No need for a starter pipe? Thanks for making me change my mind on headers, again

I'm doing the exact same thing you are! Matter of fact the cat just showed up on the doorstep today from ebay.

Quick question, were you able to buy the ends separately from Mac? I have the 3" ball end left over from when I purchased my headers and off road pipe, all I need is the flared end.

Oh, by the way, you can also get the header collector ball flange pipes (as a set) from Flowmaster. Jegs has them on their website for $45.99

Part Number: 389-15925

They look a little cleaner and better made than the MAC ones, the 2 bolt flange is stamped steel, as opposed to a flame cut piece of 3/8 plate.

Yes, but I only saw the ones that were reducers too...I'd use the Mac made ones on Mac headers, thats just me.

Yes, you will be able to swap them by simply unbolting one, and bolting up the other. Very convenient.

The ORP is a seperate piece. I think you can find it at a few places for about $60

There is no need for the starter pipe, but it will come with the MAC headers anyways.

My coated starter pipe is just sitting here since the ends that I bought from MAC came as a pair. I just used both of the ends from MAC instead of the coated starter pipe on one end of the CAT, and the MAC ball end on the other.

No they came as a pair. I don't think you can just get one end. I was looking for one end also since I already had the the starter pipe with the flared end.

Oh, and the 2 bolt flanges are PLENTY strong from MAC.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info & the PM Dan. I'm going to do the same thing with my exhaust (MAC mid lengths to Hooker 3") & couldn't find out how to do it. The TF30 is available from MAC as stated for $34.50 plus shipping. MAC's phone # is (800) 367-4486. I sent an email but got no response, so it was easier to just call.

I ended up ordering the carsound high flow cat yesterday and am doing the exact same setup as steroman.

I copied you....but I have been wanting to do it for the last year and a half. .

I am going to put up some sound clips as soon as the y-pipe and cats gets to me.

I am just going to have the cat welded as well....

I rather have a cat so that I don't get that raspy sound...... I would prefer a more full sound that is not as loud.
