Re: Broken timing chain

Chances are good that you smacked a few valves.

Re: Broken timing chain

You would be very lucky if you don't have bent valves, and a few holed pistons is also a very real possibilty. Heck I had a timing chain let go once while starting the engine and had a mess of bent valves.

Re: Broken timing chain

Did ya change the cam too?

Most times a broken timing chain is due to the cam gear and crank gear not being lined up. I always think it's a good idea for most guys to leave the timing chain be or just change the chain when they do a cam swap. Usually the problem is the crank gear not being pressed on the crank enough.

Re: Broken timing chain

I thought our engines were none interferance.

I thought that meant that if the timing chain snapped, the engine would be 'safe?'

That is an apparent matter for debate.

Re: Broken timing chain

With my cc305 and 1.6's and dished pistons I have .544 lift and my intake valves all hit the pistons when the timing chain was installed wrong by the builder. The stock pushrods will bend, and if they dont bend the intake valves will bend. The stock lift is only .460. So I would check the intake pushrods and replace if necessary. Next, do a compression check, mine was zero so thats pretty clear. I'd say your chances are 50/50 on the valves being bent.

Re: Broken timing chain

its funny that this guy broke a stock chain on a stock motor, and yet most of the idiots on this site say stock chains are ok to run with heads and cam motors.

To the original poster i would say your probabilitly is high you bent some valves.
