My buddy broke his timing chain, and we have it all ripped apart to fix. Now, how do we line the dots up (away from eachother, toward eachother??) and how do I make sure the crank or cam gear isn't a 180* out??

you line it up dot to dot. Have you checked everything out to make sure its ok? I wouldn't put the car back together until i checked it for bent valves.
