broke crank (hub) bolt into 2..ahhhh!

I was reinstalling the hub using an impact to pull the hub on for the final 1/8 inch or so. The bolt snapped into 2 on me

I have heard horror stories about stripping the crank threads, but never anyone actually breaking the stage 8 bolt into two. Anyone else done it and how bad was the fix?

I think if i pull off the hub i will have enough screw to get vice grips on, if not looks like it will have to have a rod welded onto it and be spun out. Any words of wisdom? Im SO frustrated right now its unreal, I think the bolt broke b/c i have had the hub on and off 3 or 4 different times. Too much stress on that bolt. I suggest replacing it to anyone who has had the hub off more than 1x.

Finally, bad idea to drive the car? I kinda doubt that the bolt actually does much with as tight as the hubs are.

Pull the hub off and see what you can do from there. Could need a machine shop to drill it because those stage 8 bolts are not fun to drill for an easy out. Your positive this was a stage 8 bolt to begin with?

Jared, sorry to hear that. Hopefully I don't end up doing the same thing. Wish I could help, but I think you can help me right now. I'm installing a cloyes D/R set and need some advise. I already had Dave clearance the timing cover. How do I get the waterpump gear out and what do I need to know about the CPS. Any tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I feel your frustration. It just seems like one thing after another sometimes. Anyway, pm or email me via the GCFBA.

Thanks
Evan
PS: Good luck with your car and seeya at Dave's ...maybe?

I did something similar.. but my bolt didn;t snap.. just the threads stripped outta the crank...

I just ended up drilling out the old threads with a titanium bit, and puting a heli-coil in. worked great, I've had it that way for 20K or so.

Next time heat up the hub and slide it on, it's a lot easier than using the impact.

Hopefully the bolt will just back on out with no problem.

Tell me about it

Hopefully i will get it fixed early this week and be able to hit the track wed/sat. Think i will go all out and borrow those 28" streets that dave has. Should make for some 1.7ish 60s if the track is decent.
