brand new lt1 burning oil!
brand new lt1 burning oil!
ok my father just got his 93 lt1 back from the engine builder and we install and start it up... break it in and about half way through break in it starts smoking!? we finished break in cuz it wasnt bad we thought it was just rings not seated. well now after running it up to temp for a while (not drivin it around cuz its winter in new england) when it gets up to temp the TPS trys to open the throttle body and then it starts to smoke a little; when the TPS does open the throttle its puffs a bit of smoke but after it seems not to burn at all???
we have a BBK throttle body and a good engine builder behind it
if this sounds like anything other than break in please let me know because spending any more money on this right now is out of the question.
thank you

I assume that the heads were refurbished---as in new valve guides, seals, etc. Just in case the oil rings are seated and it still smokes at idle, startup, deceleration, pedal to the metal (whenever the manifold vacuum is high) worn valve seals or guides may be the culprit. Just food for thought.
ya the whole engine was rebuilt, heads and all, we have a mild cam in it also. there is also an MSD distributor on it now.
we havent got to drive it yet because its a 1931 chevy street rod and its winter here in new england lol. streets all dirty and nasty.
just worried us because we spent a lot getting this rebuilt and we are trying to get out other project done too, a 1932 5 window coupe.

2 4 6 8

1 3 5 7
6 and 8 are carboned up but not as bad as the WHOLE passenger side.
and 2 and 4 are fine??
could this possibly be a bad computer?? or mayb a bad tune because we got the computer and hyprtech chip about 10 yeras ago.

What color is the smoke that is coming out of the tailpipe? Blue would indicate you are burning oil, white means coolant (which I doubt by looking at the plugs) and a greyish or black means you are running rich.
we get a puff of blue when the TPS opens the throttle body when it gets up to temp but thats it. when you rev the engine manually it doesnt smoke??
some grey smoke but not a lot at all
it does smell like a lot of fuel when it is running too
what would cause 2 of the plugs to be perfectly fine and the next 2 to be running rich... all the plug wires are in the correct order and it runs rough but not as rough as you would think. AND the whole passneger side to be black like that?

A bad 02 would not cause 2/4 to be OK and 6,8 to be fouled...
I understand you can't drive the car out, but it's going to be very hard knowing if your wires are even hooked up right if all you can't even tell if its making power or off.
Maybe 2 and 4 aren't even getting spark, or the wires are swapped, or maybe no fuel? everything else would run pig rich then (at least on that side) because of the extra oxygen and unburnt fuel... Somethings not getting spark or fuel on those 2 for some reason.... How smooth is the engine running when it idles?
Recheck the wires and make sure they're hooked up right to the opti, you need to figure out whats up with those 2 cyclinders first before you can begin to troubleshoot the soot on the rest of them

all wires are correctly hooked up if im right in thinking driver side from the front back is 1-3-5-7 and passenger front to back is 2-4-6-8?
the 2-4 plugs are burning fine seeing finite carbon build up on the electrode, its just the others that boggle my mind.
and its not oil burn because the black isnt wet.
