Which brake pads should I go with?
Which brake pads should I go with?
My front brake pads are wore out and I'm planning on replacing them this weekend. I don't want to change to a new system or anything - just replace the pads.
It looks like NAPA and Autozone both carry the metalic and ceramic types - which one is better?
Which brake pad do you guys suggest going with or have you had luck with in the past?
Thanks a ton.

I went with Hawk HPS pads, they brake a lot better than stock replacement pads but they also dust much more.

Hey Troy,
I know my opinion probably doesn't count since I am two cylinders and 100 hp short, BUT I am running the NAPA ceramics and absolutely love them. I do some 100mph passes down country roads and do a lot of heavy double axle car trailer towing and I cannot beat these pads up!! You will notice an immediate difference in pedal pressure vs. stopping distance, it's awesome! I haven't cleaned my truck in forever and the rims are not covered in brake dust like they were w/ the napa lifetime semi metallics. These ceramics do sometimes squeak once in a while, not the stopping squeak, just the pad rubbing the rotor a little when you first start taking off, cleaning the the truck and hosing them down to clean them off makes em quit.
I get in my wife's blazer which has lifetime metallics and about rearend people cause I am so use to not having to use so much pressure to stop the truck.
Definitely pull your rotors and have them turned before you install the pads, then scuff the rotors in straight lines w/ 180 grit paper and clean w/ brake cleaner. install everything and be real light on the brake usage for the first 500 miles to allow the pads to heat temper and wear in (don't tailgate and keep normal speeds). then have fun with them!!
good luck,
jeff

I'm using the pads from the previous owner - he said they were performance pads. I liked them so I want to go with something pretty good since I do some auto-xing and like to get on my car. I do have some rims on my car so i'd like to keep them clean, but I imagine the more dust - the better the pad. Anyone else heard good things about the Hawk HPS pads? Are these pads the metallic or ceramic? I noticed they are quite a bit cheaper then the NAPA ceramics - but i've heard good things about the NAPA ceramics also....

For me, low brake dust, and great stopping power are my 2 biggest things with brakes. EBC Greenstuff pads are great for both. Almost no brake dust and awesome initial bit stopping power. No problems in the rain at all, and so far (15k miles) they haven't eaten up my cross drilled and slotted rotors. So they are not aggresive on the rotors, which most high performance pads are.

i have lifetime warrenty raybestos metallic quiet stops. they work good, have a lifetime warrenty, and don't squeak like many lifetime metallic pads. they actually squeaked a very little bit until i got them broke in but now they are great. they are not cheap though. i think the rears were around $95 and the fronts were around $75. i have not had a problem with brake dust but the car is not a daily driver, is not out in rain or bad weather, and i am not too hard on the brakes. i would recommend them though. you have to love the lifetime warrenty. i would recommend turning the rotors when changing the pads. you actually may be able to get stock replacement rotors for about the same cost as turning your rotors. not sure though. i upgraded to lifetime warrenty raybestos rotors so my bill was a big one anyways.
