Borla + Mac - cats = ?

I will be installing my Jet-Hot Mac's with an ory mated to my Borla in a week or two. I'm starting to wonder if I'm going to regret not having cats; I saw a Z with Borla tips take off from a toll on a highway, and it sounded horrible. I know going with an ory creates some popping, but this was ridiculous. I like the way my car sounds now (Borla 3/4 open, manifolds, cats) and I'm afraid my headers and ory will not just amplify my sound, but make it sound like an '89 Crown Vic wagon whose exhaust fell off. Anyone have this setup? How raspy/poppy is it? And if I put on my ory and get it all set up, will a muffler shop be able to add cats (Carsound) very easily? Looks pretty tight on a '97, and I'm keeping the '97 setup (not converting to '94-'95) so I'll need two cats. Would they have to make a new y pipe? Think I shoulda gotten the catted y... Thanks

Borla + MAC's - cats (ORY) = MAJOR RASP CITY!!! Same deal if you're running longtubes with no cats as well.

It don't matter if it's an LT1 or LS1 because no cats through that exhaust just sounds like plain A$$ to me (and believe me, I've heard 'em all). But then again, some on here actually like it.

If you like LOUD though, you'll be in heaven. In all seriousness, definitely run a highflow catted Y with that set-up although I personally still think Borla sounds its best (deepest/cleanest) simply behind stock manifolds & cats. Once headers and possibly any engine work are done, I strongly favor other systems like the SLP 2OTL, Hooker, Mufflex, etc.

Edit: A good exhaust shop should be able to weld some highflow cats (Random Tech bullets or Carsounds; stay away from the crappy Catco's) into the ORY...At least Speed Inc (my local performance shop) said they would be able to weld some stock OEM cats into the Mac ORY I had waiting to be put on my old '00 Z28...So it shouldn't be any different with your dual cat set-up as far as I know...If push comes to shove though, you could alway just have a custom catted Y made...

Good luck,

Mike

Why is everyone so anti-rasp? I must say that i love the sound of my LM with SLP Ypipe....I guess its just all personal preference. Personally I would love to get headers but i cant afford the ones i want right now so im stuck with my quiet raspy car.

Do you have cats on your LS1? Then your SLP Loudmouth system really isn't "raspy." Now ditch the cats (whether you have headers or not) and you'll hear what rasp really is. Sorry, but catless Y-pipe designs make V8 muscle cars like ours sound very crappy IMO...True that it is all about personal preference, but I just like a deep, clean tone all the way through the rpm range...

What causes it to be raspy? Why do older muscle car without cats sound the good? Ever seen the movie Bullitt? There is some sweet Double clutchin rasp in there. (in case you dont know what rasp sounds like) But I llike the way the mustang sounds in that movie??? But generally I think rasp sounds poopy.

The reason why 4th generation V8 F-bodies sound raspy without cats is because of the "single" exhaust design (Y-pipe). Y-pipe's without cats create a very uneven sound frequency in the mid rpm range (that nasty rasp). The older muscle cars you're thinking of without cats don't have that raspy/tinny sound because they run "true dual" exhaust set-us (H-pipe or no cross over at all). A lot of us fellow 4th gen guys are converting to true duals w/ X or H-pipe set-ups that actually make our cars sound GOOD without cats...

Do a search as there is a lot of info about that on here...

I don't like the catless borla with a full exhaust system either. Way too poppy and raspy. I have mac mids w an ory hooked to a magnaflow catback. The magnaflow is more mellow than the borla, and with a full exhaust it sounds great. It is probably just what you want, if you don't want all that borla rasp.

I have this setup on my car. I run it wide open, yea, its a little raspy, but I like it for the most part. The rasp will dissapear if you run the block off plates in the Borla.
Mine sounds similar to a no cats/LT's setup, just without the higher pitched 'wail' longtubes will give you at high revs.

Ditto, my borla sounds a little nasty with an offroad pipe when it has the open plate. If i close it off though it sounds much better.
