Question Blue Smoke....

Driving the formula today, and I noticed that at idle, and idle only, the exhaust is a light blue color, and smells very very rich. It doesnt smell like oil burning at all, the car runs strong as hell, but I havent gotten it tuned yet. Is this just a rich condition? When I get on it, it has the carbon dark color, then back down to that light hazy blue color at idle...any ideas?

If you are burning blue smoke then you are burning oil. Keep an eye on your oil level.

As you have already been told you are burning oil. I bet you have an intake leak. I say that because I had the same problem. At idle the car smoked and it had a blue tinge to it. I pulled the intake and found oil leaking into the intake runners of the heads. Changed the intake gaskets and plugs and the problem went away. I think if you change the intake gaskets your problem will disappear. Good luck.

Ya, I am sure I overtorqued the intake bolts, the torque wrench I used was junk, older than I was....I bet that is the problem...thanks

If I rememmber the torque specs are 35 psi. Don't quote me on that but I a pretty sure. Check the manual it will tell you for sure.

Torque specs on the intake manifold were first torque to 7 foot pounts, then 35ish.

Also make sure you start with the center of the intake and work you way out.

Actually, blue smoke can also be a sign of worn piston rings. Infact, its MORE likely that its the rings going bad rather than the valve leaking. It can be either one, but USUALLy its the rings.

Blue smoke= rings

white smoke= cracked head

black smoke= rich

The car has never smoked before, and I had the intake off 3 times since I finished my heads/cam swap, and the car doesnt even have 50 miles on that combo yet. The last time I had the intake off to fix the leak, I used an old torque wrench that I still think is broken, I tested it the other day, no matter how hard or how many times you turn it, it wont go past 35 ft lbs.....so I think oil is getting into the ports that way....hehe
