Blown piston ring?
Blown piston ring?
After my car got done with the heads and cam swap... it's being burning through oil and smoking like no other... about 5 quarts a month... and thats not daily driving. The problem I'm guessing is one of the 3
1) The shop that did it did a pretty shady job the first time
2) I have a madz28.com tune, which I have only heard great things about, but possibly the tune is off? I doubt it since he has a great reputation and all, but possible?
3) I have a blown piston ring, the car does have 84,xxxx on the clock, and many of those were 1/4 miles.
Whats your opinion? Time to go farther into debt and go 383 if it is a blown piston ring?

Re: Blown piston ring?
I'm experiencing the same problem, after doing the same thing (minus cam) at a shady shop.
I'm thinking the same thing.. either 383 or ls1/ls6 conversion if its a piston ring.. I haven't had the time to check yet on my car.. but there is an alternative possibility:
It could be your valve seals, which would be pretty easy to replace.
(My heads sat for 3 years before I put them on the car, so I think my valve seals dry rotted)
Have you done a leak down test yet?
Have you even done a compression test?
Apparently leak down test will tell you if its valve seals and compression test will tell you if its a piston ring.
I'm not a veterain, but I can pretty much guarentee you that you aren't smoking and burning oil due to a tune. That's gotta be mechanical.
You could run rich because of a tune, but then your problem would be gas mileage, not oil consumption.
Anyway, good luck, keep me posted about leak down and compression test results. I hope for your sake that its in the valvetrain, which is where my money would be, since you just had your heads done (and I assume they didn't touch the bottom end at all).
