Blown Head Gasket
Blown Head Gasket
So my Z's stock motor finally gave up at 182k on the clock and blew a head gasket. It's going to be getting a new one in a few weeks, I was just wondering what all I should do while the heads are off? I don't have a whole lot of money to spend and I want to keep it drivable since its my dd.
Until you are ready to rebuild the whole motor, just surface the heads and put them back on. I have seen too many oil consumption issues arise after rebuilding heads on very high mileage motors to ever recommend it.
I suppose it depends if the motor had good compression before the gasket blew.
If the rings are sealing, an H/C install is a great way to pick up some serious power
for your trouble and downtime. Otherwise, I'd just install a good set of 1.6 rockers
and slightly thinner head gaskets for a few extra HP and put the heads back on.
(Have them checked before you reinstall, they may need to be milled flat or replaced if they warped)
