I had REV valve springs which should have been good to 550 lift. THe cam is a 510/552 lift with the 1.6 RRs, but I can't believe that it would break.

At this very moment, the original mechanic is (supposedly) talking with the mech that I took it to last nite (they both have been in the business for many many years and know one another.)

The "new" mech is semi retired and doesn't even want to consider working on this thing. He does have someone in mind, in the same, complex who will do the work, but I haven't talked to him yet because I am waiting to see what the hell my "old" mechanic says about this situation.

I think I'm screwed. I just believe that whoever worked on the car should take the responsibility to fix the damage. All I did was ask to have it worked on and payed to have it done. I did not abuse the car at all.

Springs good to 550 lift on 552 lift = springs get hot, expand, coil bind and physically force the keeper off of the valve.

On a brand new motor, WTF would you skimp on valve springs for?

And all this is based on a perfect theoretical installed height? lol

Sounds like you had one of the maxed out springs slightly shorter than the rest and it ate itself before the others had a chance to jump ship at the same time.

No theory to it,Coil bind vs lift HAS to be checked at assembly. Also what spring pressure vs what retainers and keepers. If it is an unknown part--replace it with a known, proven part to prevent failure.
Everything HAS GOT TO BE CHECKED to prevent what is happening to this guy.
You can't just take a bunch of parts to a wrench and say put it together.Ya have to TELL most to check it during assy or you will get a "flat rate" job and failure.

If these things don't happen then it's gonna get into your pocketbook very deep.

Ya can pay me now or pay me later!!!!

I agree....if what failed was a result of improper parts then the liability lies with the owner unless he specifically said he wanted everything checked. It seems like not enough research went into this project before buying the parts. If you buy a bunch of parts and take them to a mechanic and say put this together then he is assuming you already did your research and know that these parts can work together.
