black smoke?
black smoke?
Well i reved my car up for some today and a lot of black smoke came out...I was like wtf...it made my car look like a pos...it wasnt like a ton but you could see it. My car doesnt see above 3000 rpms much so I was thinking maybe carbon build up? I get about 300 miles on a tank with highway/city driving about 10 highway miles a day. 82,000 miles. Should I run some sea foam through it or whats the deal?

Just fuel its no problem, unless its alot. Maybe tune-up time or scan to check readings.

well the plugs and wires too i believe "should" be good for 100K.... but i still wouldn't count that out as a possibility by any means... and yes if you drive your car easy all the time... it very easily could be carbon buildup... i run that 12,000 fuel injector cleaner from greased lighting thru my tank every 5,000 miles and my mechanic says that that along with my hard driving is keeping my fuel system and valves clean as a whistle...
however... you said you were reving your car... was it at hard throttle then you let off the gas suddenly??? cause that sounds like the most like cause to me...
do this... have someone look at your pipes while you rev the car.. . hit the gas hard a bunch of times in a pulse wile basically letting off the gas completely in-between pulses... make sure you get it to high rpm... (above 4 k)
black smoke is unburned fuel... if its letting out a little puff of black inbetween pulses its because the injectors are dumping in all this fuel while your revving it and as soon as you let off the throttle instantly... the TB closes and theres no air for the last little bit of fuel injection....
i think its happened to everyone at one time or another...
i would still change your plugs/wires simply because of their age tho... soon
and that injector/fuel system cleaner couldn't hurt either...

It can be carbon, a lot of vehicles that are "around town/old people" vehicles tend to get a buildup because they are not burning all of the fuel in the combustion chamber. You can try a TB cleaner like Gumout's TB/Air Intake cleaner, or you can go the route of seafoam. Once you do it, take it out and wind her up a couple of times for fun (and it will get more of that carbon out)
you revved it and then stopped
instantly clsing the TB, cutting off air beforethe 02 sensors read/adjust the fuel output. thats all.
you just made the a/f ratio realy rich momentarily until everything went back to normal.
