Biggest Cam on Stock Converter.

I've been away from the Fbody scene for awhile so I'm a bit rusty on some of the new stuff for the LT1's in the last few years. I've got a little bit of money saved up and would like to do a cam swap. I'm wondering whats the biggest cam I can run on the stock TC? Thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't run anything bigger than the stock cam on the stock converter. But that's not to say you can't run something along the lines of the LT4 hotcam or equivalent. IMO, a high converter on the stock cam provides more overall gain than an aftermarket cam with a stock converter.

I agree, do the bolt-ons and stall first.

Been there, made this mistake. Even with a little tiny ZZ4 crate motor cam it was a mistake.

BEFORE you do a cam do stall, and gears

Sell off the junk pulleys and Granatelli and put the money towards a stall. Both of those were poor mods.

Re: Biggest Cam on Stock Converter.

So, refresh my memory, why do we not want to run a stock TC on a cam? I ask because I am on stock TC. (I know, I know, I need a TC)

Re: Biggest Cam on Stock Converter.

You will get more performance gain from the TC first.

Yes you can do it, I did, I am just smart enough to admit I did it wrong and try and help others avoid repeating my mistake.

With 3.73 gears you should be able to run any (stage 1,entry level) whatever
you want to call it.Just keep the intake duration around 216-222 and the LSA
at 112 and it should work fine. And you can always add a stall later.

I admit the Granatelli MAF was a bad investment, but it was the first "mod" I did to the car 11 years ago when I bought it. But the junk pulleys are staying. lol

Re: Biggest Cam on Stock Converter.

Looks like I'll wait to do the cam swap until I have a stall ready to go in too. I've narrowed my choices down to the CC503 or the GM846. Any opinions on either of these or something else close to them? Thanks again.

I am partial to the AI 226/234. Lots of guys are flying with that grind on stock heads.

Re: Biggest Cam on Stock Converter.

I dropped .5 and gained 6mph with the crane 227 cam and 3.73's with the stock converter. Definitely wasn't a waste. It had 0 driveability issues and still launched harder than the stock cam.

Thanks for the heads up on this cam. This is definately at the top of my list now. The specs look great!

I did a ZZ4 cam before pretty much anything else and a 2800 stall Edge dropped the quarter times .8. Had I done it before the cam I would have expected .4-.5 from the converter.

With my first heads/cam setup I had the AI 190cc heads and the 226/234 cam and the car went 11.9 with 3.73s and a 3400stall, that cam was mellow enough for pretty much anyone to like it.
