Big cubes without big cam/heads. is it worth it?
Big cubes without big cam/heads. is it worth it?
I live in cali, so due to smog i can't get a good head cam combo. the biggest cam i'm willing to risk is probably just the LT4 hotcam. now, if i built a 383 w/ this cam, 1.6 rockers, headers, and got it tuned, would those extra inches make a difference? it seems to me that you'd make close to the same power as a 355 but it would be more driveable and i'd have a better chance of passing smog. what do you guys think?
Re: Big cubes without big cam/heads. is it worth it?
with a 383, that cam will seem small
the advantage of more cubes is being able to run a bigger cam (certainly bigger than the hotcam) and still have good emissions and driveability
you're gonna want your heads ported well and have a cam that matches with a good tune so it'll pass
you can talk to somebody at ai or lloyd elliot for that

im in cali also, but I dont worry about smog. The lt4 hotcam is very boarderline. Some people pass with it, some dont. your better off putting a cam in the car, that you want, and when it comes to smog time, swap it out...Its only 1 days work..

water pump, distributor, crank hub, timing cover, timing set, ...
intake manifold, rockers, lifters ...
the radiator ...
the tuning ...
Twice in one week!
your advice sucks

You may want to look at LPE cams. 260-724-2552...I know, I know, they are small for a 383, but my 211/219 got me into the 11.70s at 118 and passed MD emissions since 1995 with no tuning changes...or you can go a little bigger to a 219/219....both are small, but will pass emissions and makes good power. My heads are relatively small, too...2.00/1.56s CNC'd and hand blended by LPE...
Now I'm in PA with only visual emissions in my county I'm getting a custom cam from Joe Overton...Still a little small 224/226 .560ish/.570 on a 110 or 111 we'll see what happens...Looking for 11.40-50s...and continued good drivability...

Unfortunately in CA, its hard to find smog "friendly" shops, and the car actually has to pass emissions, because its hooked up via CPU to the Smog station in Sacramento, and if you fail, its an automatic "referral to a referee" The car also has to be scanned at the facility. Also now and days mannnny people are being sent to "test only" cites. So you have no choice there but to do what I have done. And no need to cry over the work, its once every two years. It costs to go fast, especially in CA...Now I believe your advice was much better than mine? What did you mention?? Oh yea thats right..nothing...thank you move through..
